THURS 26TH NOV 6.30-8PM USIT, 19/21 ASTON QUAY, DUBLIN 2 Ooh la la: Ms Bruni in The Simpsons Simpsons mock man-eating Bruni FRANCES first lady has been ridiculed as a wine-swigging, chain- smoking man-eater in a new episode of The Simpsons called The Devil Wears Nada. Carla Bruni, wife of president Nicolas Sarkozy, bumps into Homer and his colleague Carl in Paris and promptly throws herself at Carl, declaring: I want to make love, right now. In another scene, Homer takes a far-too-easy swipe at French cinema. The controversial episode was broadcast in the US a week ago and has since become a web sensation in France. The gags could send international relations between Washington and Paris to a new low after the cult cartoon series created the insult cheese-eating surrender monkeys when France protested against the Iraq war. By Shawn POgaTchnik New fears for peace as bomb fails to detonate Evidence: a burnt out car linked to the failed bomb attack on a police building in Belfast is examined by a remote controlled robot Picture: PA SUSPECTED IRA dissidents left a 180kg (400lb) car bomb outside police reform head- quarters in Belfast but the home-made device failed to detonate. As politicians warned of a rising threat from IRA diehards, four other suspected dissidents were yesterday arrested following a separate gunfight with police. Northern Ireland Chief Constable Matt Baggott said the attempted bombing of the Northern Ireland Policing Board office repre- sented an attack on the entire peace process. That process has created a joint Catholic- Protestant government and growing support for law and order, achievements that the dis- sidents hope to undermine, he added. The explosives-laden car caught fire but didnt explode and two men were seen run- ning away from the vehicle. The attackers suspected getaway vehicle was later found burning in the nearby New Lodge district, a poor housing project long known as an IRA stronghold. Around the same time, at least three gun- men fired shots at a police patrol in Garrison, Co Fermanagh. Police returned fire but no in- juries were reported. Three suspected IRA dissidents were later arrested near Garrison and a fourth across the border in the Republic on suspicion of in- volvement in the shooting. A Catholic member of the Policing Board, Alex Attwood, said IRA dissidents are broad- ening the scale of their attacks on democracy. Those who are trying to create a climate of fear cannot be allowed to win, said Belfast Mayor Naomi Long. The best way to com- bat these thugs is to make devolution (power- sharing) work and show everyone that it wont be destabilised by anything. Meanwhile, Peter Robinson, Northern Ire- land First Minister and leader of the Demo- cratic Unionist Party, warned against the return of direct rule, saying collapsing power-sharing and alleged Sinn Fin threats were destabilis- ing the entire devolution process. Speaking at the partys annual conference, Mr Robinson said, while there are threats to peace and stability in the North, I cannot guarantee the future of the Assembly, but I can guarantee that it will not be the DUP that will walk away. index.html2.html3.html4.html5.html6.html7.html8.html9.html10.html11.html12.html13.html14.html15.html16.html17.html18.html19.html20.html21.html22.html23.html
