Special wand inspired by young Harry Potter fans By Ross McGuinness Abracadabra: Chris Barnardos device can control dozens of gadgets HARRY POTTER has given two in- ventors a wizard idea. The Kymera Wand is a buttonless, universal remote control that can command any infra-red device in the home with a flick of the wrist. Users can change channel, volume or pause a DVD simply by using one of 13 different gestures. It uses movement control technolo- gy similar to the Nintendo Wii, and can learn up to 13 infra-red codes from existing remotes and assign each command to a gesture. It has sold more than 10,000 units in ten weeks since its launch, is now in 41 countries, and is on target to sell 200,000 units by 2010. Created by Chris Barnardo and Richard Blakesley, the 55 gadget has sparked intense interest, with its website getting one million hits. Father-of-four Mr Barnardo, 47, of Bishops Stortford, England, had the idea after seeing how enthralled his children were by Harry Potter. Harry Potter is such a simple idea but it really does cast a spell over peo- ple, he said. Adults and children love the thought of magic and living in a fantasy world, and this lets them live a little bit of that in their own front room. Weve shipped it to 41 countries in- cluding Guatemala, Japan, Australia and Russia. Half our orders come from America, he added. Its an en- tertaining mix of whimsy and tech- nology. Its elegant and quirky. The science fiction writer Arthur C Clarke once said: Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguish- able from magic, and thats true. Wizard idea: The real Harry MODEL Katie Price successfully completed yet another bushtucker trial in Im a Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! She put on a brave face as she had to drive a car around a course, stopping four times to fight through gunge, eat bugs and conquer her fear of spiders to win 11 stars out of a possible 12. It was 31-year-olds sixth bushtucker trial but she was happy to become the jungles breadwinner. I suppose you get into a routine and the routine is I go out to work to bring back the food, she said. Asked why viewers of the TV show kept voting for her to do trials, she said: Either they love me or they hate me. No idea. Ive always got lovers and haters. But my family and friends, they probably love it because they get to see more of me but Im telling them now Im not loving it. Back at the camp, Kim Woodburn, 67, revealed that she had no contact with Aggie McKenzie her co- presenter on How Clean Is Your House? when they are not filming the show.
