By Ross McGuinness Suits flew, sir Skys the limit as skydivers set a new world record THESE images show 70 skydivers breaking the world record for the most people to fly in formation wearing special wingsuits. The jumpers leapt from four aircraft at a height of 4,000m (13,000ft) before flying into a diamond pat- tern for 3km (two miles) at speeds of more than 100kmh. British skydiver Mark Birdman Harris, who has completed more than 6,000 jumps and 600 wing- suit dives, hailed the record-breaking feat. Not only have skydivers from around the world come together to create something amazing but we have also raised more than 3,000 for charity, he said. The spectators were amazed and could easily see the huge formation building in the air even though they were on the ground. Wingsuit divers wear just a helmet, parachute and specially designed body suit, which features flaps between the legs and un- derarms that act as wings. The surface area of the fabric allows the diver to slow their vertical speed to 10kmh while travelling horizontally at up to 100kmh. It takes 200 skydives before you can even try flying a wingsuit but these jumpers each had at least double that number. Duncan Wright, who captained one of the teams at the event at Lake Elsinore in California, said: It has been an amazing collaboration of the best wing- suit pilots from around the world. Im very proud to have been part of this skydiv- ing achievement. Awful: Twins CHART-topper Calvin Harris has said he crashed the X Factor stage to make a mockery of the competition and its terrible music. The Im Not Alone singer, who ran on stage with a pineapple on his head during John and Edwards act at the weekend, criticised the frightening stranglehold of judge Simon Cowell on the UK charts. And he said he may auction the pineapple to raise money for Great Ormond Street Childrens Hospital. The 25- year-old Scottish singer and producer, who has been banned for life from X Factor, was escorted from the TV studios after the stunt and was replaced on the guest panel of the ITV shows spin-off The Xtra Factor by presenter Nick Grimshaw. Speaking on Chris Moyless BBC Radio 1 show yesterday, Harris hit out at the Irish twins John and Edward Grimes for being knowingly funny, but said he wanted them to win the X Factor because it might undermine the competitions future. Echoing an interview given by singer Sting last week, in which he said the X Factor had put music back decades, Harris criticised Cowell for encouraging generic pop music. He said: If you look at the chart, its like a frightening stranglehold that Simon Cowell has got over the entire music chart in the UK at the moment.
