Yes, the train is back. I suspect the only people glad to see it back are Dundalk commuters who didnt have the benefit of a direct bus transfer from Dundalk station. The buses were everything the train isnt clean, comfortable, and most importantly fast. From getting on the bus to getting into the office was taking me exactly one hour. The train this morning took one hour and 30 mins, and I had further to walk from where the bus used to drop us. But now that were back to the badly-run service that Iarnrd ireann have been happily providing us for years, and which increases every single year Im over the Moon! Disgruntled commuter I could go on about how I work in the private sector and have no job security and this and that. But that would be unfair and insulting to hundreds and thousands of public sector workers without whom this society would not function properly. We need the teachers and nurses and the guards and the probation officers and the judges in our society. However, the Government still needs to save money as the current spending levels cannot be sustained. A blanket salary cut on the public sector will never be palatable or equitable. The cuts need to be graded from the top- down starting from An Taoiseach. I think that if our elected representatives are creative about the whole process, the savings can be made with popular support. Now forgive me if Im wrong but I thought by definition holy water would be self-healing? Dominic Boo hoo: I thought it disgraceful that people booed Cat Stevens during his show [at the O2]. Hes a legend and has earned artistic licence to do as he wishes on stage. Im a best of fan and didnt know a lot of songs he played but I enjoyed his performance immensely. All aboard the Peace Train. Abe Ugly award: One thing I noticed when watching the Ireland v France football match was how ugly the Irish players are compared with the French. So I suppose that even if we dont get into the World Cup we should get an award for having the ugliest team! Pat, Dublin Fair weather fans: I wonder how many of the so-called football fans at Croke Park on Saturday to see an English league B side with an Italian manager will bother to go and see a League of Ireland side play? Larry, Drumcondra In Brief dealt with by reducing the number of managers and the number of consultants etc. We all need to see the recession as an opportunity to improve things for the better. The Government should hold the people who created this mess accountable so that people will think twice before going down the greedy route again at the expense of the millions of hard-working people employed in the Irish economy both in the public and private sectors. AW All I see in the letters page, on the radio and TV is the public fighting itself, while the ones responsible for this mess have fleeced us and gotten away scot-free! People are being jailed for debt while were bailing out the banks that put them in debt! We shouldnt be pointing fingers at civil servants and unions. We should be forming angry mobs outside the department of finance, the HQ of BoI, PTSB, AIB, UB and Ibec and looking for our money back. Eoghan Sendusyour txt Gav, you make me sick. Some of those people you talk about sitting around all day are our senior citizens who have paid far more tax in their lives than you, I am sure, and are now facing a grim Christmas. LR Can we please stop fighting about the public sector the only way well get through this recession is to work together. Wylie Why do Irishmen all carry huge umbrellas? You cant get by them on the footpaths. Are they lacking in a certain area or just afraid of getting wet? Maybe some Metro readers will enlighten me. Maria Paul, hair on girls is natural, you know we all came from monkeys. By the way my boyfriend loves my hairy physique, he says Im his own teddy bear. Yeti I hate all this talk about all of us being in the same boat. Yes, we are all on the same boat but most of us are in the galley rowing while a few are on the top deck enjoying the good life.
