Life of Brian: Kerrs time in the Faroe Islands Todays highlights With Adam Hyland Pick Of The Day Away With The Faroes RT2, 9.40pm When Brian Kerr was appointed manager of the Irish football team, most people were delighted that a man who had worked his way up the ladder, enjoying great success at junior level, was given his chance. It didnt quite work out, but nobody could hold a grudge against such an honest man. Now, as manager of the Faroe Islands, with a population of 49,000, Kerr has a big task on his hands. This fly-on-the-wall documentary chronicles a week in his life as he prepares his team for a big match against the French in a David and Goliath battle something we know all about. With a squad of fishermen, carpenters, students and policemen, could Kerrs team perform miracles? When Under Ether RT2, 11.40pm Fans of No Disco may rejoice as this music video programme that pays a little homage to its predecessor comes to our screens. Michelle Doherty and Elton Mullally present the show that gives a subtle, knowing nod to the ber-cool with its PJ Harvey-inspired title. Horizon BBC2, 9pm The permanently baffled Alan Davies brings us on a fascinating journey to answer that proverbial question: how long is a piece of string? What appears to be a simple task turns into a mind-bending voyage of discovery where nothing is as it seems. A maths expert reveals the short length of string may in fact be infinitely long, and when Alan attempts to measure his string at the atomic scale, events take an even stranger turn. Not only do objects appear in many places at once, but reality itself seems to be an illusion. 6pm 7pm 8pm 9pm 10pm 11pm :60second interview Orla Gargan Dublin Gospel Choirs director Orla Gargan was raised on classical music but discovered Soul and has since performed with the group at Electric Picnic and Croke Park. After 13 years, the Choir has just released their second album, Doing Your Thing Interview by Lucy White Youre doing Mass one day and singing at 7-up Christmas On Ice and Electric Picnic or Croke Park the next Congrats on Doing Your Thing. How would you describe the record? Its a fusion of American gospel music but weve also included some Irish hymns given a gospel treatment its all very funky, theres a load of vintage organ sounds, loads of Hammond. All very uplifting and energetic, we think! The London Community Gospel Choir helped arrange the Irish tracks. What did they bring to the songs? They gave a lot of creative input to the album, which we were delighted about. They have a huge expertise in the gospel arena theyve been together for 25 years at this stage, so they did a great job. What are the origins of the Choir and also your involvement? It started at a graduation mass where the students basically decided to incorporate some music from Sister Act, the movie which was out at that time. They enjoyed singing the music so much that they decided to continue on. I joined about ten years ago as a singer and then started helping out with harmonies and conducting Ive been working as full-time director now for four years. Its so brilliant I was working in pharmaceutical sales before this. Whats the average age group and male/female ratio? We start from the 20s to mid-40s, and are two- thirds girls and one third tenors we have ten or 11 guys in the Choir now. It can be hard to attract the boys to singing. But we have a great bunch and our profile has increased dramatically over the past five years. When did your interest in gospel start did you grow up listening to it? No, my background is classical, playing the piano and violin when I was four. My poor mother, driving four of us into town seven days a week for music lessons... And later I was in a folk group for seven years before I joined The Dublin Gospel Choir, which is As well as weddings and funerals, the Choir can be hired by churches to increase Sunday congregations. Is this a regular occurrence? We have a particular format which we call A Night Of Soul in which we put on a concert in conjunction with a parish and incorporate some of the local acts. Its a huge community event for all the family and schools churches can be packed out with between 800 and 1,000, people really rocking the place! Well get everyone singing and dancing along and the more the people join in with us the more we love it because you get a great energy back from a congregation. The group has shared the same stage with Damien Rice, Rod Stewart, John Legend. Who would be your dream collaborator? I think the whole Choir would love to work with Stevie Wonder. Youve got to aim high! Doing Your Thing is out now; for tour dates, log on to www. dublingospelchoir.com how I got into singing. But in terms of what I listen to, its a bit of everything from classical to soul to whatever. The Choir performed on the main stage at this years Electric Picnic and to an audience of thousands at Croke Park in 2008 an overwhelming leap from churches and concert hall venues to outdoor stadiums? Absolutely, but its one of the things that keeps the Choir so interesting. Youre doing mass one day and singing at 7-up Christmas On Ice and Electric Picnic or Croke Park the next. Electric Picnic was one of our favourite gigs of the year, its such a great festival and the atmosphere was amazing singing on the main stage with the wind in your hair was a real buzz. And singing the national anthem at Croke Park in front of 82,000 people... a special moment we wont forget. Electrifying. 14 metrolife Tuesday, November 17, 2009 index.html2.html3.html4.html5.html6.html7.html8.html9.html10.html11.html12.html13.html14.html15.html16.html17.html18.html19.html20.html21.html22.html23.html
