:60second interview Picture:Getty Television What To Watch I predict a riot: MacIntyre looks back at Dublin in 2006 Todays highlights With Adam Hyland Pick Of The Day Irelands Crime Capitals TV3, 9pm Tonight sees Donal MacIntyre look at Dublin, and in particular recall that day in 2006 when we saw a full- scale riot on our main thoroughfare. MacIntyre talks to people involved in the riot and asks how it all came about and why, but there is a sense that many participants were simply more than happy to cause havoc when given the chance. Perhaps more interesting is the presenters highlighting of the rise in recently unemployed, skilled people turning to selling drugs to make a living in these hard times. The Panel RT1, 10.15pm The first episode of the new series last week saw what was arguably the most sensible, down-to-earth discussion of our economic crisis yet to grace our screens. Perhaps with David McWilliams now at the wheel, The Panel is being steered towards more serious matters? If it sticks to last weeks gravitas it may do well, but with this weeks guests including Chris Eubank, this is not likely. Hes known for his nerdy, neurotic, loner roles. Hes also been in The Illusionist, Cinderella Man and M Night Shyamalans Lady In The Water. His latest film, Cold Souls, opens on Friday Interview by Graeme Green I still get people sending me glasses of wine at dinner, and I couldnt care less about wine to be perfectly honest You play a lot of neurotic nerdy types does that say something about you? Its funny, I never think of these guys as neurotic, particularly. Maybe thats a worrying sign. Maybe it is. But part of it is just about the reality of what you look like and how you come across. Clearly, I dont look like Tom Cruise. The roles I get are going to fall inside a certain spectrum. Did you ever want to do action hero roles? No, not particularly. Its not something I ever felt a great lack of in my life. I really feel I get the more interesting stuff. I always say, the great thing to be in the movie business is a white male character actor, because you can be bald and overweight and hairy. Its a huge relief I dont have to think about my muscles and hair and all those things. In Cold Souls you play an actor called Paul Giamatti who has his soul stolen how difficult is it to play yourself? What was nice was it was clearly a character. I really got what the director was after, a kind of neurotic New York actor type of guy. Did you have to do a lot of character research? No, I feel like Im fairly familiar with neurotic New York actors. Not being one myself, of course (laughs) I just know a lot of them. Who would you most like to swap souls with? The first person I think of is Winston Churchill. I think hed be pretty interesting to have inhabiting you. Youd have to smoke a lot of cigars. Yeah, youd be able to indulge in all that stuff, and still kick the Nazis around. Itd be great. Youd have all this incredibly inspiring rhetoric coming out of you all the time. And who would you most like to swap bodies with? What would be interesting to me would be to be in the body of one of those girls like Jessica Simpson, just to see what it of wine at dinner, and I really couldnt care less about wine to be perfectly honest. You dont know your claret from your Beaujolais in real life? I dont know the difference between all these kinds of things. What was more interesting to me with that film was the obsessiveness, somebody whos so obsessed with something in their life because theyre trying to compensate for something else. It couldve been anything. Everybody always seems really disappointed that Im not a big wine guy and that I couldnt care less. Are there any of your films youd like to erase? No. I mean, Ive done some real crap, but Im OK with that. Which are the real stinkers? Oh God, one of the first films I ever did was a real piece of trash called Past Midnight or something like that, a bad slasher movie, but I have no interest in erasing it. I have no regrets about anything Ive done. would be like to walk around like that, to see how differently the world reacts to you. And, of course, just to shower myself, which wouldnt be unpleasant. Youd been working a long time before your big breakthrough. Did you think it might never happen? No. I never had any grand ambition for myself. My career for a long time was kind of patchworky and all over the place. I never really expected any big breakthrough. It was a pleasant surprise. How many bottles of wine did you get sent after Sideways? I got a lot of stuff sent to me. I still get wine company reps who give me their card. The merlot growers of California tried to get me and Tom Haden-Church to do an ad campaign because I think merlot sales kind of took a dive. But I still get people sending me glasses 20 metrolife Thursday, November 12, 2009
