Construction jobs meltdown looms A FURTHER 100,000 jobs will be lost if the building slump continues, construction chiefs warned yesterday. With 200,000 workers in the sector unemployed, industry leaders called on the Government to invest in labour-intensive projects to stop the haemorrhage. The Construction Industry Federation (CIF) also claimed 6billion worth of projects planned for 2010 may not be delivered on time. CIF director Tom Parlon warned less than one sixth of the capital programme for 2010 was now under way. BY BRiAn HuTTOn Prices differ by up to 2 times EVERYDAY healthcare products are up to two and a half times more expensive from one shop to another, a survey has found. The National Consumer Agency (NCA) investigation uncovered huge price differ- ences on items such as toothpaste, shaving gel, cough mixture and cod liver oil. While supermarkets were generally cheap- er, the poll also found independent pharma- cies compared well with big chemist chains. Ann Fitzgerald, of the NCA, said the sig- nificant price differences show it really pays shoppers to check around before buying. We urge consumers to be conscious of the options available to them when purchasing personal care products and over-the-counter medicine and to check where the best value can be found, she said. The NCA surveyed 117 products sold across eight chemist chains, four independ- ent pharmacies and the four largest super- markets: Tesco, Dunnes Stores, Superquinn and SuperValu. With a basket of 25 commonly-bought items, Tesco was the cheapest supermarket at just 80 while Superquinn was the dearest at around 95 a potential saving of 15. The biggest difference was on Radox herbal bath liquid which was nearly twice the price in Superquinn than in Tesco or Dunnes. Comparing all the outlets together, the sur- vey found LOreal hair colour which was 160 per cent dearer in an independent Dublin pharmacy than it was in Dunnes Stores. A number of outlets had cut their prices since the September survey, the NCA added. tHe new rainbow range A model presents a creation by graduates of the Beijing institute of Fashion Technology during China Fashion Week Sex so noisy, even postman moaned A COUPLES sex sessions were so noisy that passers-by and even their postman complained. Marion Dixon, an environmental health manager, told Newcastle Crown Court, in the UK: I heard a male voice howling loudly, which I felt was very unnerving. The hearing continues. INDEPENDENT senator Fiona OMalley has criticised the provision in the Nama legislation to allocate 2.5billion towards professional fees. The former Progressive Democrats TD, who lost her seat in 2007, said the decision to fork out this amount of money at a time when the Government was looking to save 4billion was crazy. Earlier, Fianna Fil senator Larry Butler called on Finance Minister Brian Lenihan to introduce legislation to deal with a potential upsurge in mortgage defaulters. Sen Butler said there were many ways to prevent a second Nama made up of the properties of 35,000 homeowners. Professional fees for nama crazy Critical: Fiona OMalley Firms must sell 4% biofuelNEW regulations for the fuel industry were published yesterday, compelling suppliers to include an average of four per cent biofuels in their annual sales from July 2010. Under the legislation announced by Minister for Energy Eamon Ryan, biofuels used by oil companies must produce 35 per cent fewer greenhouse gases than fossil fuel. Biofuels include bioethanol, derived from plants such as sugar and maize, and biodiesel, derived from vegetable and animal oils. Mr Ryan said the four per cent level is necessary to help reduce carbon emissions and to increase energy security. It is estimated around 30 per cent of biofuels used in Ireland are produced by Irish companies. But, with a four per cent obligation, it is hoped the legislation will provide an impetus for increased local biofuel production. But Labours energy spokeswoman Liz McManus warned the rush to biofuels has led to increases in food shortages and practices which endanger the environment in the developing world.
