Over the wall: George Lee meets victims of oppression Todays highlights With Adam Hyland Pick Of The Day Beyond The Berlin Wall RT1, 10.15pm Its 20 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall and amidst the celebrations it is important to remember that many people have been left scarred by the effects of the East/West divisions the wall embodied. Tonight, George Lee meets some of these people; Hartmut Richter, a dissident terrorised and persecuted by the Stasi secret service, Rudolf Muller, who dug a tunnel under the wall to get his children out, and Birgit Bose, an athlete whose body has been destroyed in the quest for Communist victory. Later Live With Jools Holland BBC2, 11.20pm Jools is still pulling in the stars for his seminal show, but of late he has been mixing it up quite well and tonight is no exception. Rickie Lee Jones and Alice In Chains perform while Martha Wainwright will be there to belt out some Edith Piaf songs from her latest album, but perhaps the main attraction will be a certain Steve Martin who will be playing his banjo to promote his album of bluegrass songs. Not to be missed. Horizon BBC2, 9pm Linguistic theorist Noam Chomsky looks at the mysteries behind speech in this fascinating documentary. Speech is one of the most extraordinary gifts we possess, yet until recently little has been known about the processes that drive our systems of communication. Drawing on relatively new findings and research, he takes us through the patterns we use to signal our thoughts to others and illuminates some aspects of human nature that may surprise us. 6pm 7pm 8pm 9pm 10pm 11pm :60second interview Ric OBarry Ric OBarry, 68, was the dolphin trainer on hit 1960s show Flipper. When it finished, he became an activist against keeping dolphins in captivity. His campaigning against the dolphin slaughter in Japan features in a documentary called The Cove. www.savejapandolphins.org Interview by Andrew Williams Dolphins mostly die of stress-related diseases, we literally bore them to death... a loud, cheering crowd causes them a lot of stress What relationship did you have with the dolphins you trained on Flipper? A very intense one. I saw the dolphins more than I saw people. I literally lived with the dolphins. The house they used for exterior shots on the show was my real home, the dolphins lived in the lake. The crew only filmed for 13 weeks a year and I was there with the dolphins the rest of the time. Did you have a favourite? Kathy was the one they used for Flipper 90 per cent of the time and I was closest to her. They all have very different personalities. I took a TV set down to the dock every Friday at 7.30pm when the show was on so she could watch and she recognised herself. She could tell when it was her or one of the other dolphins. She was also interested in music, particularly Ravi Shankar. Sitar music has a similar sound to a dolphin. When did you decide they shouldnt be in captivity? Halfway through Flipper I realised how intelligent they were and they shouldnt be in captivity, although I didnt do anything about it until Kathy died. It sounds dramatic but she committed suicide. She swam into my arms, stopped breathing and died. Why is captivity bad for dolphins? Theyre kept in tanks just four blank walls. A snake gets a more stimulating environment at the zoo. The dolphins mostly die of stress- related diseases, we literally bore them to death. They are sound-oriented creatures so a loud, cheering crowd causes them a lot of stress. Do people swimming with dolphins on holiday contribute to the dolphin abuse? Yes, when people swim with the dolphins or see shows when they go on holiday theyre participating in the problem. Do people realise dolphins are captured and exported from Japan? I dont think so and thats what makes the dolphin slaughter in Taiji so lucrative. They capture and sell whales being killed in Japan each year. Thousands of dolphins are being killed and people are eating them and will become sick. If dolphins and whales are going to be saved it wont be by the International Whaling Commission. What can people do to stop the dolphin slaughter? Contact their political leaders and ask them to put pressure on the new Japanese government and never go to see a captive dolphin show. What are you up to next? Im promoting the documentary, then Ill go back to Japan and shut down the cove, where they kill the dolphins. Its about gaiatsu which means external pressure in Japanese. Even the Japanese in Tokyo and Osaka dont know people eat dolphin meat, they have no idea whats going on in their own country. The fishermen say the slaughter is part of their culture, but how can it be when most of the country doesnt know about it? dolphins to resorts in Orlando and Miami, to the US navy, Turkey, to new dolphinariums in China... They can be sold for $154,000 (103,000) each. Thats what underpins the slaughter. The ones that arent sold are killed and sold as meat. The film says dolphin meat is dangerous as its contaminated with mercury. If people eat a lot of tuna will they get mercury poisoning? Absolutely. Go to any sushi restaurant, buy tuna or any other big fish and have it tested, Im sure it will test positive for mercury. Any fish thats been in the ocean long enough will be contaminated. Its a worldwide problem due to pollution. You showed footage of dolphins being stabbed to death to the International Whaling Commission. Did it have an impact? I dont think so. The people in that room are talking about 1,000 whales in the Antarctic, which is important, but there are 23,000 14 metrolife Tuesday, November 10, 2009 index.html2.html3.html4.html5.html6.html7.html8.html9.html10.html11.html12.html13.html14.html15.html16.html17.html18.html19.html20.html21.html22.html23.html
