NEW Ex minister gave driver a 1,750 tip A FORMER junior minister left a tip of more than $2,600 (1,750) to his limo driver before claiming it back on expenses. Tom Parlon, now the director general of the Construction Industry Federa- tion, gave the tip to drivers who chauf- feured him around Atlanta on a St Patricks Day trip three years ago, when he was serving as a minister of state at the Department of Finance. According to figures obtained by a Sunday newspaper under the Freedom of Information Act, limousine hire for the week-long trip came to 13,400, while Mr Parlon and his wife, Martha, ran up a bill of 4,200 at their 800-a- night hotel. The total cost of the trip was more than 21,000, including the 20 per cent gratuity to the limo drivers. Mr Parlon said the limousine ex- penses in Atlanta were crazy but that he was not aware of the gratuity pay- ment at the time and he described his expenses bill of 316,000 during his time in office as value for money. It has also been revealed that Energy Minister Eamon Ryan hired a bike for 100 during a seven-day trip to South Korea and Japan, and then spent 1,200 on limousine hire. On separate trips, Mr Ryan flew to Brussels for just 124, and to Edin- burgh for 76. Meanwhile, it has emerged that Tour- ism Ireland spent more than 100,000 from 2003 to 2005 sending former Ceann Comhairle John ODonoghue and his wife, Kate-Ann, abroad. BY ROSS McDONAGH Big tipper: Mr Parlon TWO men died in separate road accidents in Dublin and Meath at the weekend. One of the incidents followed an encounter between some local men next to a parked car in the Clonards estate in Dundrum at 2.45am yesterday. A man then got into the car and drove off dragging another man some 20m under the vehicle. The 28-year- old local man died from his injuries at St Vincents hospital. Meanwhile, a 27-year-old man was killed near Slane, Co Meath, when his car collided with a van at a crossroads at about 9.45pm on Saturday. Elsewhere a man is serious but stable in hospital after a vehicle collided with a parked garda car at the Red Cow on Saturday morning. Road accidents claim two lives PRESIDENT Mary McAleese attended a Remembrance Sunday service in St Patricks Cathedral in Dublin yesterday in memory of those who died serving with the British armed forces. She also laid a wreath at the cathedrals war memorial. Almost 50,000 people from Ireland were killed in World War I, and more than 5,000 Irish volunteers died in World War II. President at war memorial service Keith Duffy gets some help from Jenny Lee Masterson and Laura Doheny who showed their support for trainer to the stars, Paul Byrne, as he launched his new fitness studio.
