The teenager is currently the 25th best windsurfer in the world according to the recently announced World Wave Rankings, after impressive performances at the Reunion Wave Classic in France and Professional Windsurfers Association events in Germany and Gran Canaria. A marketing student at DIT, Clancy believes Ireland offers some of the best windsurfing conditions on the planet, having honed his skills on the west coast of Ireland and at his local spot, Dollymount Beach. A recent injury has forced him of the water for now, but he is confident of moving up the rankings again next year. A GRUELLING 15-day trek in sub- zero temperatures, climbing more than 5,000metres of rock, snow and ice. And thats just to get to the starting line. In less than a month, the highest mara- thon in the world will take place on Mount Everest in Nepal. Obviously, you have to be insanely fit or just insane to take part so the line-up wouldnt be complete without an Irishman. On December 4, Dubliner Marc Bar- rett hopes to become the first Irishman to complete the race in more than two decades. The last of his countrymen to try it had to be flown out before the race even started. Each year the exclusive extreme race attracts entries from all over the world. The Everest Marathon is a 26.2-mile (42km) high-altitude mountain race held every two years, which requires in- credible endurance and stamina. And although thousands apply, only 75 places are available in each mara- thon. Successful athletes face months of training and charity fundraising. If successful, I will be the first Irishman to run this marathon in over 20 years. The last Irishman to attempt it in 2007 had to be air- lifted out before he reached the start line, said 35-year-old Marc. To reach the start, close to Ever- est Base Camp at 5,184m, Ill have to trek through the Himalayan foothills for 15 days and camp out in temperatures as low as -20C. All proceeds from the race are donated to The Everest Marathon Fund, a charity that supports health and education projects in Nepal. So far Marc has raised almost 93 per cent of his 3,000 target.
