MATCH FACTS Fergie: Defeat worse than Anfield MANCHESTER United boss Sir Alex Ferguson admitted the defeat to Chelsea, his sides third away from home this season, was more significant than their recent 2-0 reverse at Liverpool. The fact is Chelsea go five points clear of us, he said. The defeat to Liverpool didnt affect our position in the league. Match-winner John Terry praised Chelseas team effort, adding: We talk about the attacking players and midfielders coming back and working hard for the team and thats exactly what we got today. [The five-point lead] was exactly what we wanted coming into the game weve been working on it all week. That wasnt the best of games but I think overall we deserved it. Captain fantastic: terry leaps to head the winner against united at Stamford Bridge Picture: Reuters CaPTaInJohnTerryputChelsea five points clear of manchester united at the top of the Premier league with a second-half winner at Stamford Bridge. Terry headed home a Frank lampard free-kick in the 76th minute, although united claimed Didier Drogba was in an offside position. united had their chances with Wayne Rooney twice going close but Carlo ancelottis team held on to make it a club-record 11 straight home wins. The three points leaves the Blues firm favourites for their first league title since 2006 and a third defeat of the season is a serious setback to the Red Dev- ils hopes of a fourth successive Premier league crown and record 19th title overall. In a tight encounter Chelsea had the first opportunity when Branislav Ivanovic burst down the right flank and let fly with a left-foot shot which Edwin van der Sar saved at his near-post. Drogba had another opportunity for the Blues but united were the better side in the opening period yet, despite their dominance, they did not create a clear-cut chance. Five minutes after the break Drogba got the better of uniteds John OShea but his 25-yard effort went wide of the target. Ivanovic was booked for a foul on giggs in the 57th minute as the game began to open up. Ricardo Carvalho managed to get his body in the way of a fierce shot from Darren Fletcher mom- ents later. Chelsea had gone over 14 hours since they last conceded a goal at Stamford Bridge. But ancelotti needed to try and give his side more of a cutting edge and rem- oved Deco in the 63rd minute in favour of Joe Cole, who was cel- ebrating his 28th birthday. Rooney went close minutes lat- er when he shot wide. Seconds after, the united striker brought a fine save from Petr Cech with a curling effort which was destined for the top corner until the Czech Republic goalkeeper intervened. There was a worrying moment for Chelsea when Drogba was kicked in the chest by Jonny Evans. astonishingly, the striker was then booked by referee martin atkinson after receiving lengthy treatment. however the Blues went in front in the 76th minute when ashley Cole was fouled by Fletcher on the left and Terry rose to glance lampards free-kick into the corner of the united net. The visitors were furious as Drogba appeared to be in an off- side position as the ball bounced beyond Van der Sar. Rooney was booked afterwards and then atkinson cautioned OShea and Carvalho in the 82nd minute as tempers flared. antonio Valencia was lucky to stay on after for a two-footed challenge on lampard as unit- eds frustrations threatened to get the better of them.
