On Wednesday night, two directors of Derry City FC met with four FAI staff and they freely admitted that over 20 players had been on dual contracts, which is a clear breach of the regulations. And it is disappointing to hear a denial of that since the board meeting. Because thats just not true, said Delaney. They told us on Wednesday night that they had misbehaved. There is contractual evidence to support and substantiate that and to be out saying there isnt two contracts with any player is just plain wrong and misleading and not fair to the Derry public. What went on Ill say it again is that the players had two sets of contracts, one was registered with the Association and that differed substantially and materially from the ones that were held in private. And we had to be fair to clubs like Bray and Drogheda and Galway who could have been involved in the play-off so we had to call a meeting quickly and make a quick decision. Meanwhile, Derry will be seeking immediate payment of 60,000 from the FAI for finishing fourth in the Premier Division as well as 20,000 still owing from their participation in Europe earlier in the season to help pay their wage bill. gomes fury at bent dive HEURELHO GOMES has claimed former Tottenham striker Darren Bent dived, above, to win a penalty at White Hart Lane on Saturday. Gomes avoided a red card but Bent, who now plays for Sunderland, missed the spot-kick and his side lost 2-0. The Spurs goalkeeper said: I didnt think I would get sent off because I didnt think it was a penalty. Maybe when he dived he changed the game. Hughes not drawn on extra pressure MARK HUGHES insists he is not overly concerned by Manchester Citys winless run. City have drawn their last five Premier League games, after a flying start to the season and dropped two points on Saturday when they were held 3-3 by Burnley at Eastlands. City sit sixth going into the international break and Hughes (pictured) said: We are just having a period where we are not quite able to make best use of the advantages we have. But it will turn out to our benefit soon. I am sure about that. The City boss has cited growing expectations among fans as one of the reasons his players are beginning to feel the pressure. Hughes spent 120million on signings and knows he is expected to get a result at Liverpool when the Premier League resumes. Maybe we are suffering because of increased expectation, he added. We started the season very strongly. But teams have now had a chance to look at how we set up, who is going to be playing and what formation we are going to use. premier league rugBY INTERNATIONALS rocky ramped up for croke park reunionBY JOHN DONNELLY Rocky returns: Elsom in action against England on Saturday and, inset, after winning his Heineken Cup medal for Leinster in May Picture: Getty AUSTRALIA captain Rocky Elsom is relishing the chance of a return to Dublin for this weekends clash with Ireland so soon after inspiring Leinster to Heineken Cup glory. Elsom was voted European player of the year last season during his sabbatical at Leinster before re- turning down under in June to resume his interna- tional career. Elsom leads the Wallabies to Croke Park and the second leg of a potential European Grand Slam on a high after Saturdays 18-9 victory over England at Twickenham and is looking forward to locking horns with former Leinster team-mates Brian ODriscoll, Jamie Heaslip and Rob Kearney. It is funny how it works out, smiled Elsom, who has replaced Stirling Mortlock as skipper. I am re- ally looking forward to going back to Ireland. I made a lot of good friends there. I had a great time at Leinster. I cant think how I could possibly have had a better time! But what made it an easy decision to leave was that I thought I would regret not going back to Aus- tralia for international rugby. Because I would be missing that aspect of the game, I thought it would take away from the experi- ence of staying in Ireland. I do regret leaving pretty soon after the Heineken Cup final I would have liked to stay around a bit longer! Elsom was a close observer of Irelands Grand Slam triumph and suggested Ireland could well prove a tougher nut to crack than England. England led for almost an hour but Australia dom- inated the second half at Twickenham and should have been out of sight by the time Adam Ashley- Cooper sealed the victory, adding to Will Genias first-half try ten minutes from time. Ireland had a great Six Nations. They have a good style and have a lot of players playing well. I can only imagine they will be very difficult, said El- som. They dont really look to have too many weaknesses. It is going to be a big match. ALUn-Wyn Jones insists it is time for Wales to throw off their nearly- men tag after their latest attempt to beat the All Blacks ended in a frustrating 19-12 failure. Jones said: We will keep getting the tag of nearly men but that is going to come to an end sooner or later. Weve got to shelve the nearly-men tag and move forward. Weve come a step closer but not close enough. u ALL Blacks star Dan Carter has been cited for an alleged dangerous tackle on Wales scrum-half Martin Roberts at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday. Jones tired of being a nearly man index.html2.html3.html4.html5.html6.html7.html8.html9.html10.html11.html12.html13.html14.html15.html16.html17.html18.html19.html20.html21.html22.html23.html
