Television What To Watch Remembered: The life and times of Nuala OFaolain Todays highlights With Adam Hyland Pick Of The Day Cloch Le Carn RT1, 7.30pm Adding a stone to the burial mound is one way of translating this programme title, but rather than heralding the end of a life it seeks to celebrate the achievements of its subjects. Tonights episode looks at author and newspaper columnist Nuala OFaolain. Those close to her describe her life as full of laughter, controversy, sorrow and pain, as she cut a swathe through Irelands public life while also revealing in her memoirs the many complications in her private life. The Night The Wall Came Down RT2, 7pm It was 20 years ago today that one of the Eastern Blocs hardest-line regimes was brought down by a slip of paper. No one expected it, no one ordered it, and no one was to blame for it but one way or another, everyone had a hand in it. This tear-jerking piece of historical nostalgia tells the story of the infamous Wall and how an East German government spokesman called Gnter Schabowski read out the piece of paper hastily handed to him moments before a press conference, initiating those joyous scenes we can never forget. (R) 6pm 7pm 8pm 9pm 10pm 11pm :60second interview Eamonn Fallon CEO Eamonn Fallon set up Daft.ie with his brother Brian in 1998 it is now one of Irelands biggest media success stories. This week he shares the secrets of his success at Metros Legends In Your Lunchtime series, in partnership with National College Of Ireland and Newstalk 106-108fm Interview by Lucy White We now have over 90 per cent of the properties for sale in the country listed on Daft Did you ever imagine when you set up Daft that it would become so successful? When we started out, there were only a few thousand people using the Internet in Ireland now over 2.5million Irish people use it so we have been very lucky to ride the wave of Internet adoption from the beginning. Back in the day, people used newspaper classifieds as their primary tool for househunting. Now, almost no one does. What was the seminal moment when you and your brother decided to launch the company? When we first hit on the idea in early 1997, we actually didnt do anything about it. It was such an obvious idea that we assumed a big company out there would already be working on a service. It wasnt until six months later, when nothing turned up in the search engines, that we decided to go for it ourselves. Our first big break came in October 1998 when Trinity decided to give free Internet access to all its students. This led to 14,000 new users opening up a browser for the first time, many of whom needed to rent a place. To promote the site, I plastered posters across the college with paper tear-offs with Daft.ie printed on them. They were so popular I had to replace them three or four times a day. After that marketing campaign, word of mouth made the service take off like wildfire. How has the Daft service evolved? All those people in their 20s and 30s who started off using Daft 12 years ago are now in their 30s and 40s. The largest demographic on Daft is 35-45-year-olds looking to buy property. We worked hard on getting all the estate agents who sell property using our service. We now have over 90 per cent of the properties for sale in the country listed on Daft, twice as many as our nearest competitor. How has the economic downturn affected site traffic? It has never been higher, with over connections with the Science Gallery. People really liked it and wed love to run it again if we get the chance. Are people who dont post pics on Daft either stupid with a camera or hiding heinous crimes of soft furnishing? These days, an ad with good photos can be the difference between selling or not. If you dont post photos you are putting yourself at a major disadvantage. Whats next for Daft? Right now were busy expanding the brand outside the Republic Of Ireland. We recently launched Daft.com in Northern Ireland and will be expanding into another European country before the end of the year. Were also very excited with our investment in boards.ie and adverts.ie and are working with the team on some major new initiatives. Eamonn Fallon will talk to Newstalks business editor Conor Brophy from 1pm to 2pm on Wed at NCI, in front of a live audience. Admission is free but online registration is required visit www.ncirl.ie 1million people looking at over 100million pages of property every month. Many people are checking out house prices in their area to find possible bargains. We are even seeing users browsing the site to look at photos of other peoples houses to get ideas for their own interiors. Which award(s) are you most proud of? It has to be the Deloitte Fast 50 Award last month which recognised Daft Media as the fastest growing technology and media company in Ireland. This was a great boost for our team as most of them joined in the last two years, and its thanks to their hard work that we got to the number one position. Whose idea was the Playhouse LED display on Liberty Hall during the Theatre Festival? Brian saw a more basic version of Playhouse in Berlin a few years ago. Daft provided the funding and Brian put together the team from 16 metrolife Monday, November 9, 2009 index.html2.html3.html4.html5.html6.html7.html8.html9.html10.html11.html12.html13.html14.html15.html16.html17.html18.html19.html20.html21.html22.html23.html
