The Panel RT1, 10.15pm Any TV show going into its ninth series should be must-see viewing, but after about series four The Panel lost its appeal, falling back on a chummy feelgood factor the panellists had developed among themselves, to the detriment of the rest of us who wondered what was so funny. Now, incredibly, the harbringer of recent economic woes David McWilliams has been parachuted in to change all that. Tonight sees him jousting with medium Colin Fry. Wonderland: I Won University Challenge BBC2, 11.20pm A gentle dig at the oddest winners of BBCs University Challenge. But theres a serious sentiment underpinning the quirkiness of this documentary that intelligence is not celebrated enough, which is something of a shame. 6pm 7pm 8pm 9pm 10pm 11pm :60second interview Betty Cosgrave Life coach and motivational speaker Betty Cosgrave developed her own self-help techniques following a childhood of neglect in Bray in the 1950s. Her new book, The Whispering Soul, combines established wisdom with her own personal insights Interview by Lucy White I was told by a clinical psychologist that I was working from dull average intelligence and that I would only cause more problems for myself Would you describe the book as self-help or memoir? The best description would be an inspirational self-help book. What I wanted to achieve was a greater awareness among everyone of the value and benefits of listening to what your own soul is telling you. I have provided a number of techniques, which are easy to incorporate into your day-to-day life, and when used on a regular basis, will provide amazing change. There are case studies in the book. Which source material/ chapter had the biggest impact on you? It would have to be my sons case history because it caused me to question everything about myself as a parent. It showed me in a very clear way that we always have choices and that it doesnt matter whether the issue is relationships, addictions or any situation at all once we come to understand that we have choices about how we move forward, then it is possible to change the course of your life. How would you describe your childhood? My childhood was, for the most part, very sad, lonely and challenging. I had a deep grief inside, which left me with a sense of not really belonging anywhere. What was the turning point that pointed you towards the self-help/ life coaching path? The day I was told by a clinical psychologist that I was working from dull average intelligence and that I would only cause more problems and disappointments for myself by trying to achieve anything. I absolutely could not accept that diagnosis and from that point on, I began to challenge myself in all areas of my life. Are we more receptive now to the idea of psychotherapy, or is there still a stigma? My feeling is that after all that has happened economically over the last 18 months, its now more acceptable to admit that youre having difficulties and to ask assume youre totally sussed? There is a huge amount of curiosity once people realise what my work is. They often ask my opinion about situations in their own lives. Everybodys looking for a little guidance and I explain to them that they already have the answers they need within themselves. Some are quite sceptical at first. I will point out that the problem often lies with the questions theyre asking themselves and when they ask the right questions, the answers usually come pretty quickly. Whats the best advice youve received? Firstly, watch what you say. Get rid of words like should because it always makes us wrong. Replace it with the word could, and you now have a choice. Secondly, get rid of guilt. It locks us into negativity with ourselves and others. Replace it with honest, constructive reflection. Its far more positive and has a greater chance of producing the results you want. The Whispering Soul, IPPS, 12.95. for help. Many people do not have close relationships with colleagues or friends that they can open up about their feelings and this is where the talking therapies come into their own. Its really helpful to be able to sit with someone whos outside your emotional circle and to discuss whatever your particular issues may be. Whats the best and worst thing about being a life coach? From my point of view, there is no downside. Its all about taking positive, forward- looking steps in your life and looking honestly at where you are and where you want to take yourself in the future. Its a privilege for me to be able to share my clients self- discovery and achievements and to see them enjoy the wonderful changes in their lives and the ripple effect of positivity in those around them. When people learn that youre a life coach, do they automatically 16 metrolife Thursday, November 5, 2009 index.html2.html3.html4.html5.html6.html7.html8.html9.html10.html11.html12.html13.html14.html15.html16.html17.html18.html19.html20.html21.html22.html23.html24.html25.html26.html27.html
