METRO Wednesday, November 4, 2009 D AN AfricAN bride who battered her wealthy Dublin-born husband to death with a wooden pestle was yesterday jailed for life. Kate West tried to set husband William West alight to cover up the crime, a court was told. Mr West, 76, a retired property developer, died from severe head injuries near his beachfront holiday home in The Gambia in July 2006. An inquest into his death in the UK two years ago heard his wife confessed to murdering him. Yesterday, the 29-year-old was found guilty of murder and jailed for life by judge Justice Joseph Wowo at the Banjul High court. West, who lived in Hastings, England, and was a mature student at the time, initially told police her husband had disappeared after they took a day trip together from their holiday home to Senegal. The inquest heard her claim he simply vanished while she waited outside a convenience store for him while he bought cigars. After waiting outside for ten minutes, she said she went inside to speak to staff without success and continued searching for him. She then said she returned to the fishing village of Sanyang, believing he may have caught the ferry back without her. But instead of contacting police in Sanyang when she realised he had not returned there, she travelled to England, apparently believing he had flown home. inquiries later revealed that no such day trip to Senegal took place and she confessed to his murder. She had dragged his body down the garden, collected up bundles of logs, leaves and petrol to burn it. The remains of Mr Wests body were then disposed of by his wife in The Gambia before later being taken back to the UK. Dental records were used to confirm his identity.
