A gift of two-and-a-half tonnes of frozen cubes had mighty Wilhelm, or Willy to his keepers, in heaven. He enjoyed the bear necessities of life as he romped around in his enclo- sure at the North Carolina Zoo. To make the treat even more ent- icing, the cubes were smeared with maple syrup Willys favourite. He was anxious to get out and play in the new ice. He rolled around, dug into the ice, lay on his back and would root in it with his nose, said photog- rapher Valerie Abbott. Willy, 24, who weighs 362kg (57st) only has access to a chilly holding area if he wants to escape the public. The zoo used the event to launch a fund-raising appeal to expand his en- closure. Willy was one of six polar bears rescued in 2002 from a Mexican circus where he was held in a cage.
