In recent years, shes been concentrating on music. She is currently on tour in the UK and her new album, Terra Incognita, is out now Interview by Graeme Green I only played one psychopath and that was in Natural Born Killers, but I did it so well I convinced everyone I was crazy Whats the most rocknroll thing youve ever done? Forming a band aged 30 and leaving the safety and comfort of a very lucrative other career. Or maybe singing backing vocals for Motorhead live in Hyde Park thats pretty rocknroll. None of this is lost on me. I cherish every f***ing moment. Do you think youd have succumbed to the sex, drugs and rocknroll lifestyle if youd started a band when you were younger? Absolutely. If Id started a band at age 20, I wouldnt have even lasted out of the gate. But drugs dont get me off. Theyre really boring. I havent done drugs in 13 years. But I do know how to have a Guinness. Did you get the wild child stuff out of the way earlier then? Its funny when I was younger, specifically taking drugs, I didnt go out and it was really un-wild. Im more wild now than Ive ever been. To me, my drummers kicks and crashes and the electric guitar all channelling through my body... thats a wild f***ing experience. I feel now, when I go onstage, Im communing with the gods. I approach this as a female in this game, so I try to be a force for vitality, some sort of artful pixie from the jungle. I try to make the jungle come to life onstage. One of your new songs is called Hard Lovin Woman. Are you a hard lovin woman? Thats the way I tend to approach things, in extremes. Whether its a love relationship or my art, I love it hard. How hard has it been to convince people youre not just another Hollywood actor having a go at singing? I did have that but its, like, who cares? I knew the proof would be in the pudding. I toured like any young band would, and sometimes even harder. Do you enjoy life on the road? My band are pretty goofy and we love what were doing. But being done comedies. I only played one psychopath and that was in Natural Born Killers, but I did it so well I convinced everyone I was crazy. I think thats pretty funny. Did you get any weird fan mail after playing Mallory Knox in Natural Born Killers? Youd have thought so, but Ive only had a couple of real stalkers in my life. One time at a show, a girl gave me a shotgun bullet. I saved it, because I save things fans give to me, and then I got stopped at customs with this shotgun bullet. But when she gave me the bullet, she had a far away, slightly crazed look in her eyes she was only seeing Mallory. Do you miss working with the likes of De Niro, Scorsese and Tarantino...? Well, I was thrilled to work with Mark Ruffalo recently. To me, hes the best actor of the last ten years. But the futures wide. Im happy for the experiences Ive had, though. I think theyre pretty cool. disconnected from family is hard Ive missed funerals, I missed my dads 70th birthday party. But I realise I wont be doing this forever, so I try to appreciate it and live in the moment. Where does this leave your film career? I hadnt done a movie in five years, but I just did three movies in a row: one, Whip It, was Drew Barrymores directorial debut and also Sympathy For Delicious that Mark Ruffalo directed, with Orlando Bloom. Did you feel you got put into a sexy weirdo box with your film roles, especially Natural Born Killers? Really, was I sexy? I didnt think of it that way. Without doubt. Oh, thats sweet. No, I was always looking for interesting characters and I just became the voice of the freak, the misfit, the disenfranchised. Ive also 14 metrolife Tuesday, November 3, 2009 TX Body No Indent.
