An e-mail promotion sent by the UCD Ents Office was found to suggest an association with anti-social behaviour and sexual prowess and encouraged students to engage in excessive alcohol consumption. A member of the public complained about the e-mail, which listed an itinerary for so-called Black Week that included: Breakfast can of Dutch/bottle of Buckfast; Lunch Student Bar, UCD Fosters; Dinner pint of Guinness/bottle of vodka. Following a review from the Mature Enjoyment Of Alcohol In Society group, the UCD Students Union President conceded the e-mail content was inappropriate and did not follow the unions standard communications procedures and that a review would take place to ensure it would not happen again. teachers union lambasts plan to scrap Junior certTEACHERS have criticised an alleged plan by the Government to scrap the Jun- ior Cert. The Association of Secondary Teachers in Ireland (ASTI) reacted angrily to week- end reports that the Department of Educa- tion has proposed abolishing the third year State examination in order to save 30mil- lion a year. A Sunday newspaper revealed the Gov- ernment is considering replacing the exam with a system of continuous assessment. BY ROSS McDONAGH This would leave the Leaving Cert as the only State exam sat at second-level. Education Minister Batt OKeeffe indi- cated in September that he is in favour of a shake-up of the Junior Cert, as each de- partment assesses how to make cost sav- ing measures ahead of what is predicted to be an extremely painful Budget. However, the ASTI said it is completely against the idea. We would be very concerned about any proposal which is basically a cost-cutting exercise, a spokeswoman said. It would basically reduce the standards amongst second-level students. It could have quite a detrimental impact on their entire education. The Junior Certificate provides a very good focus for young peo- ple, it helps them to become independent learners, she added. The union also said education should be the one sector spared of cuts in December. OKeeffe: Shake-up Student sex film is... art AN ARTIST has filmed two friends having sex at a university in the name of art. The controversial film shot at Newcastle University by Joseph Steele had raised eyebrows at its preview night, yet the student insists it is art. The 23-year-old said: It was based on the idea that, with things like the internet and TV, the only way you feel anything now is through sex and violence. I wanted to shock people, he added. His work is titled, Joseph Steele: Now thats Why They Call It Art (Baby) and is on at the Hangar 51 gallery in Newcastle, in the UK. index.html2.html3.html4.html5.html6.html7.html8.html9.html10.html11.html12.html13.html14.html15.html16.html17.html18.html19.html20.html21.html22.html23.html
