Here be dragons: The curious life of the sea dragon Todays highlights With Adam Hyland Pick Of The Day Life BBC1, 10.35pm This week David Attenborough focuses on fish, the most diverse backboned creatures on the planet. In particular he looks at the sea dragon, which looks like a creature from a fairytale and has a very bizarre mating ritual. This animal is not alone in its strange behaviour though. The fringehead, for example, appears to turn its head inside out when it fights. Slow motion cameras also show the flying fish gliding through the air like a flock of birds and the worlds fastest swimmer, the sailfish, in action. Into The Storm BBC2, 8.30pm Following on from the impressive, Emmy Award- winning The Gathering Storm, this historical biopic has Brendan Gleeson reprising his role as Winston Churchill, who ponders the events of World War II and their effect on his life. The tragedy lies in the fact that his prowess as a great wartime leader ultimately undermined his political career and threatened his marriage to his lifelong supporter, Clemmie. 21st Century Child RT1, 9.35pm The series tracing the growth of the same group of 12 children over the first six years of their lives returns to our screens this autumn for its second series. Clinical Psychologist David Coleman presents this ambitious project which not only looks at how our children are developing, but also examines the different challenges and choices faced by our parents as they bring up their child within a changing and challenging Ireland. 6pm 7pm 8pm 9pm 10pm 11pm :60second interview Stephen Rogers Journalist Stephen Rogers has written for publications in both the north and south of Ireland over the last ten years. He has just written a shocking new book, Onthegame.ie, detailing the prevalence of prostitution in Ireland Interview by Daragh Reddin I have never spoken to a prostitute who is happy doing what she does. There is always an underlying reason How widespread is prostitution in Ireland? Given the numbers advertising themselves as available for sex on any given day, it is safe to assume that over 1,000 men are availing of their services daily. Whats the make-up of the average customer? A survey carried out in 2006 found that the typical man using the services of a prostitute is a young, educated professional earning an average wage. More than 60 per cent of the men who regularly use prostitutes are either married or in a long-term relationship. What is chilling about that fact, apart from the obvious cheating issue, is that many of these men are seeking services such as oral sex without a condom and therefore opening both themselves and their partner to the risk of a serious sexually-transmitted disease. From those prostitutes you spoke to, how many are content to do what they do and how many do it out of economic necessity or to fuel addiction? I have never spoken to a prostitute who is happy doing what she does. There is always an underlying reason for a womans entry into prostitution, whether it be drugs, coercion by a partner or pimp or financial problems. Wouldnt it be safer for those working in the industry if prostitution was legalised and regulated along the Dutch model? No. Prostitution is facilitating the abuse of women. It has led to the trans-global movement of women and children against their will. When they visit a brothel, punters simply put it to the back of their minds that the woman they are about to use for sexual gratification may be there against her will. If we condone prostitution we are condoning the abuse of women. What have the Garda done to clamp down on prostitution and what charges can you face? First of all it is important to clarify that it is not an offence to be a prostitute or interviewed the 18-year-old, it was weeks after five prostitutes were murdered in Ipswich. She said she was all the time scared and pointed out that often the first person serial killers come after is prostitutes. She admitted to having a crippling heroin addiction and said she would not be able to come off the streets until she got on a methadone programme. Its dubbed the oldest profession. Surely theres no way of stopping prostitution? It is certainly the case that while men have a sex drive there will always be a demand for prostitution. One of the problems in this country is that, because prostitution is not visible to the public unless they seek it out on the Internet, the Government does not see it as a priority to crack down on it. The laws here are too lax, the resources put into tackling what is after all a crime are limited and there is simply not a strong enough popular demand to see it eradicated. Onthegame.ie by Stephen Rogers (Gill & Macmillan, 13) is out now to have sex for money. It is illegal to organise prostitution (for example by running a brothel) and it is illegal to advertise prostitution and for the punter to proposition for sex. However, what the garda are really trying to crack down on is the men and to a lesser extent women who are organising prostitution. Has the popularity of the Internet and readily available massage parlours meant that there are fewer women working the streets? Yes. The women on the streets tend to be Irish and have an addiction, which means they simply do not have the wherewithal to organise an apartment or hotel room to work. Often their looks have been ravaged by the effects of addiction. From the men and women you spoke to, whose story did you find the most affecting? One of the women, Emma will always stick in my mind because she was so terrified of what she was doing. When I 14 metrolife Monday, November 2, 2009
