Make sure you eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and take a multivitamin with 400 micrograms of folic acid every day for a month before conception and throughout early pregnancy. Folic acid has been shown to reduce the risk of neural tube defects of the brain and spinal cord (such as spina bifida) in unborn children, and could help reduce the risk of cleft lip and palate. It is also important to stop smoking. Speak to your GP for further advice, and for more information about clefts, visit www.smiletrain.org.uk We need donations now more than ever.
