Can you tell me more about that fateful night? I had started the original Ghost Walk of old Dublin in 1994, modelled on what Id seen in Edinburgh. Someone said, Why dont you put it on a bus? Then I thought, if were going to do it on a bus, lets make it as theatrical as we can. I believed we had created the first Ghostbus tour in the world but I subsequently discovered there were other ghostly tours on buses, but not on a special bus like ours. How has the tour evolved over the years? It evolved in two ways. We originally scripted it, and found that while it was okay it needed to improve and it improved with the actors, and its evolving with each actor wanting to take their own interpretation of the tour. Where does your interest in ghost tales and the macabre stem from? My childhood in Tipperary. My father used to go around to farmers, fixing water pumps and milking machines, and late at night Id listen to him talk about banshees and what have you. That stuck in my mind, unfortunately. I was also fascinated by things like The Twilight Zone. When did you start doing magic and illusions? In my home town we had two magicians, and they influenced me and gave me the bug. I went to Las Vegas and performed for the casinos in the 1980s. It was fantastic, I was there for six years. Have you ever seen a ghost? Its a most fascinating thing, Ive never seen a ghost. I am by nature a sceptic, but weve met so many people on our tour and so many of our actors are believers I dont doubt them, I really cant. Have any Ghostbus riders been freaked out to the point of hysteria in the bus or graveyards? It does run riot. We have a tour guide called Brent but he goes by the pseudonym Nick. To cut a long story suspect that may have been the ghost of that girl. When Brent tells people that story, theyre often emotionally taken by it and so am I. Its a terribly simple story no big thing jumping out at you, theres a ring of truth to it. Why doesnt anyone see a ghost wearing flares or a pair of hotpants? Its always codpieces and corsets. Youre absolutely right. Maybe because apparations are usually attached to times of diseases of one kind or another. Favourite scary movie ever? The Exorcist. It scared the living daylights out of me. What do you make of the vampire revival? Twilight and all that? Its wonderful. Im particularly proud of one thing, that without Bram Stoker, none of that would be happening. Hats off to Bram. The Dublin Ghost Bus Tour departs from 59 Upper OConnell Street Mon to Thur, 8pm, Fri 8pm & 8.30pm, Sat & Sun 7pm & 9.30pm, 25 (20 per cent online discount). www.dublinsightseeing.ie short, a psychic woman told him Your name is not Nick. He said, If youre psychic, what is my name then? She said in a very breathy voice, Brent, I can see you behind monks, as he was about to launch into a story about burnt monks. Heres the extraordinary thing Brent is an ancient name for the term burnt and its connected with spontaneous combustion. This freaked Brent out. Also, we have pictures of strange photographic phenomena that were going to put in an online gallery. Which is your favourite Dublin story/landmark on the Tour? The ghost in the Shelbourne Hotel. Its recorded in the book The Lively Ghosts Of Ireland. Its the ghost of a young girl that appeared to a famous English psychic, Sybil Meek, several times and they recorded an interview with the ghost. We discovered there was a house for tuberculosis victims close to the Shelbourne and we 14 metrolife Friday, October 30, 2009
