Musician on solo hike is savaged by coyotes By roger weathers talent: taylor Mitchell was hiking solo to promote her album when she was attacked Picture: AP Coyote: attacks by the shy animals are very rare TWO coyotes savaged a young woman folk singer to death as she hiked alone in a national park. Taylor Mitchell, 19, suffered multiple bite wounds over her entire body in an incident described as very rare by natu- ralists. Police arrived on the scene in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park in Nova Scotia, Canada, and shot one of the ani- mals but the other escaped. Mitchell, from Toronto, who was tour- ing to promote her new album, was at- tacked and airlifted to a Halifax hospital in a critical condition. She died the following morning having lost large amounts of blood. Words cant begin to express the sad- ness and tragedy of losing such a sweet, compassionate, vibrant, and phenome- nally talented young woman, Lisa Weitz, her manager, said. She just turned 19 two months ago, and was so excited about the future. Park workers blocked the entrance to the trail where Mitchell was attacked and are trying to find the coyotes to determine what prompted such an unusual attack by these animals also known as prairie wolves. Theres been some reports of aggres- sive animals, so its not unknown, said parks superintendent Helene Robichaud. But we certainly never have had any- thing so dramatic and tragic. Wildlife expert Bob Bancroft said coy- ote attacks are extremely rare because the animals are shy. Its very unusual and is not likely to be repeated, he said. We shouldnt assume that coyotes are suddenly going to be- come the big bad wolf. Mitchell was an up-and-coming folk and country musician who was nominated for a 2009 Canadian Folk Music Award in the Young Performer of the Year category. index.html2.html3.html4.html5.html6.html7.html8.html9.html10.html11.html12.html13.html14.html15.html16.html17.html18.html19.html20.html21.html22.html23.html
