Human trafficking offences rose from four to 15, in the third quarter of the year compared with the same period last year, with the number of child abduction cases rising from three to 11. Violent burglaries soared in recent months with 95 homeowners targeted by criminals from July to Sep- tember, an increase of 51 per cent or 32 cases, while there were 39 kidnapping and related offences re- corded, compared with 21 in the third quarter of 2008. There were more murders, rapes, sexual as- saults on minors, robberies, cultivation of drugs, ar- son attacks and explosive finds detected in the last year compared with the previous year. Fine Gaels justice spokesperson Charlie Flanagan said the Government needs to take urgent action on home defence and rural policing, saying the 51 per cent increase in aggravated burglary was worrying in the extreme. Mr Flanagan added that the 30million cut in Garda overtime are clearly visible in the latest crime statistics. Between July and September there were: 12 people murdered; 20 cases of defilement of a mi- nor; 196 robberies; 7,047 burglaries, up from 5,555; 818 arson attacks, a 50 per cent rise; 11 youngsters abducted and 13 people imprisoned. Elsewhere firearms offences, dangerous or negli- gent acts and public order offences were down.
