Crowning glory: Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth II Todays highlights With Adam Hyland Pick Of The Day Film: The Queen RT1, 9.35pm Stephen Frears does an excellent job with the Peter Morgan-penned story about the aftermath of the death of Princess Diana, not least because the controversial story managed to evade criticism. This is in part due to the Academy Award-winning portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II by Helen Mirren, who brings a quiet dignity matched with a steely determination to the role of a powerful woman whose family has been torn apart by tragedy. Michael Sheen is also brilliant as a nervy Tony Blair. Thar Sile TG4, 7.30pm This week, following in the footsteps of Cromwell, Darwin and Parnell, Ann Marie N Dhubhchin visits the university city of Cambridge. Hooking up with scholars and academics, both British and Irish, she embarks on a tour, trying her hand at punting, an ancient form of rowing popular on the river Cam, and even meets a rare breed, lecturer Kaarina Hollo, an Irish-speaking Englishwoman. The 11th Hour RT2, 11.50pm In an exclusive REM special, Dave Fanning talks to all three members of the band in three different locations; Dublin, London and for frontman Michael Stipe, New York. With this week seeing the release of the 2-CD set REM Live At The Olympia, the programme features music, talk and footage filmed at the Dublin theatre. Leinster and Ireland rugby star Gordon DArcy pitches in too, talking about his favourite music. 6pm 7pm 8pm 9pm 10pm 11pm :60second interview Olivia Newton- John Olivia Newton-John, 61, best known for playing Sandy in Grease, has sold more then 50million albums. Olivia believes our health is linked to the well-being of our planet and supports the Rainforest SOS campaign www.rainforestsos.org Interview by Vicki-Marie Cossar Grease gave so many people pleasure, I can only be happy about that. I was 29 and worried about looking 18 for the film How do you feel about primarily being known as Sandy from Grease? So far so good, maybe in 20 years itll be weird. That movie gave so many people pleasure, I can only be happy about it. And to think I was actually unsure about taking the role. Id just made a movie called Tomorrow and it was a disaster. My musical career was just about to take off and I didnt want to jeopardise it. I was 29 and worried about looking 18 for the film. Then I didnt think I could do an American accent, so they wrote me in as an Aussie. Do you think you could still fit into those leather pants? I wouldnt want to try (laughs). Did you secretly fancy John Travolta on set? Who wouldnt, right? You look amazing. Whats your beauty secret? Thank you. One of my beauty secrets is Zamu an organic drink that my husband developed from the Amazon. Its scientifically recognised for its health benefits and is based on a fruit called the camu camu berry, which has the highest concentration of vitamin C of any fruit. How do you drink it? We wake up and do shots of it. It tastes wonderful. I contains cacao, which is good for its antioxidant and mood-enhancing properties, cinnamon to help maintain healthy glucose levels and acai to contribute to your overall health. How did you become part of The Princes Rainforest Project? Ive been passionate about the rainforest since I went in the 1990s after I had breast cancer. I wrote an album, Gaia, about the rainforest as it really touched me. We take it for granted but 30 per cent of the oxygen on the planet comes from the rainforest. Weve explored about added business to what I can do, working with my husband on his Amazon products, and this is new for me. Ive been in business before but working with him is wonderful. It does seem like my life revolves around healing, though. Youve won an amazing amount of awards and not just for your music. All my awards are lovely. Now Ive got an OBE and an Order of Australia, which is very special to me. I have a few Grammies and things but I dont really have them out. Theyre locked away. I guess its a big honour but for me its more about the process and creating something. So whats next? The wonderful thing about life is you never know whats around the corner. Im open to the universe and what it brings. Its brought me some wonderful things, particularly my husband and working with the Amazon. Life just gets better and better all the time. three per cent of the rainforest for its pharmaceutical benefits and most of the pharmaceuticals we use today are based on rainforest plants. I believe theres a cure for everything in there and thats just another reason to save it. Whats the biggest thing you learned about yourself after battling breast cancer? I think when youre faced with any life challenge you realise your own strength. Maybe you dont realise you have it, but we all do. Im strong and I have a positive spirit and you use those things when youre faced with something like cancer. With my Liv Aid project [a breast self-exam kit www.liv.com], Im trying to get women to do regular self exams because early detection is key. Youre very talented. Do you enjoy singing or acting more? Oh gosh, I enjoy them all. Now Ive 14 metrolife Wednesday, October 28, 2009
