Got A Little CaptainInYou? tunes Tartan trio: Biffy Clyro stick to their Scottish roots ego! jokes Neil. We were stage-diving at our first gigs together, weve shared a path through life, and I dont think weve changed as people. Although were now getting make-up for photo shoots Im sure that helps! He nods at Johnston, who is grimacing as a stylist powders his face. They look sweetly sheepish whenever they admit theyre proud of what theyve achieved, but they wont deny their long- time ambition. Even at 15, our vision was to do this for as long as possible, says Johnston. Our previous work was a dark and intense period for us; I think this record is a lot more hopeful. He breaks into another grin: Our last album sounded like us going to war, and Only Revolutions sounds like were coming home victorious! The Captain (14th Floor) is out now. Only Revolutions is out on November 9. SHELF SPACE New Chick Lit To Try TV presenter Jemma Forte (nope, me neither) makes a bid for The Devil Wears Prada territory with debut Me And Miss M (Michael Joseph, 9). Wannabe actress Fran lands a job as PA to Caroline Mason, half of Hollywoods most super couple. Its a nightmare job, natch, and plays havoc with Frans private life. She does, however, find inspiration for the book shes always wanted to write (and, as all this is loosely inspired by Jemmas own experience working as PA to a Hollywood star, the meta-fictional levels are almost neverending...). The concepts good but Frans prosaic, rather breathless banality is hard to get worked up about. Jessica Ruston, daughter of best- selling author Susan Hill, makes her debut with Luxury (Headline Review, 9) a bonkbusting tale with lashings of lust and hard cash. Logan Barnes has created a hotel empire and an enemy in Nicolo Flores. Now Barness ultimate property, Luxury, has opened on a tropical island, and Flores is intent on destroying the dream. It takes 200 pages to struggle past the scene- setting, but once things get going Luxury is satisfyingly trashy. The whimsy of the heart vibrations starting Marian Keyess tenth novel, The Brightest Star In The Sky (Michael Joseph, 20) is tedious, but once she hunkers down to the lives of the 66 Star Street residents, Keyes (pictured) hits her usual perceptive form, and steers the plot into seriously dark waters. Siobhn Murphy DOWN THE DUMPER The fickle finger of fame points at MC Hammer Wednesday, October 28, 2009 metrolife 13 Staying In Book Reviews Economist/journalist double act Steven D Levitt and Stephen J Dubner had a smash hit with Freakonomics, in which they applied bits of economic theory to unlikely concepts such as abortion and sumo wrestling, and which succeeded in realising many an academics daydream of writing a bestseller about their chosen disciplines all-encompassing relevance. This follow- up shows the less appealing side of this mentality, as the authors appear to colonise every possible facet of human life under micro-economics, taking a slightly grubby glee in reducing all behaviour to the most mechanically selfish motivations. This leads them to ask all manner of smirking nonsense, such as why more women dont become prostitutes, since according to their extensive research it can be an easy and profitable career. The same depth of thinking can be seen in their remarks that civil-liberties lawyers cause violent crime, while their unhelpful take on global warming is predictable, repeating various discredited myths about supposed flaws in climate-change science that suggest they neither know what theyre talking about nor care. Pitched at the type of young, brash go-getter who would rather say something provocative on a subject than something serious, this book is an empty exercise in pop sociology. Robert Murphy Non-Fiction Focus Superfreakonomics by Steven D Levitt & Stephen J Dubner Allen Lane, 24 March 1962: Stanley Kirk Burrell is born. The world will know him as Hammer. 1987: Releases debut album Feel My Power. Its a flop. 1990: His third album, Please Hammer Dont Hurt Em becomes a hit, selling 18million copies. U Cant Touch This becomes the hit of the summer with the spectacle of Hammer jigging about in his outsized Hammer Pants never far from the nations TV screens. He becomes an international figure of fun, although seems to take it all very seriously. Later hits include Have You Seen Her and the God-loving Pray. Amazingly, he even has his own cartoon series, Hammerman. 1991: Has a hit with The Addams Groove from the film The Addams Family. Spends $12million on a mansion which reportedly features a dishwasher in his bedroom to clean up after a midnight snack, a 17-car garage and a gold and black marble spa bath. 1996: Files for bankruptcy after revealing he is millions in debt. 1997: Becomes a minister. 2002: Appears in a US reality show in which he officiates at the wedding of former child star Corey Feldman. Releases more records, which all flop. 2009: But Hammer hasnt given up his rap star dreams, still performing at hundreds of shows around the world each year and has launched his own reality show. Still, that hasnt stopped him signing up as the face for recession growth-industry Cash 4 Gold. Cant pay your bills? Send your jewellery off to MC Hammer! Hell sort you out!
