TX Body No Indent. One last look: The finale of Peep Show, Channel 4, 10pm Todays highlights Pick Of The Day Peep Show Channel 4, 10pm The finale of this latest series ends on a cliffhanger but not before boiling point is reached when Marks lies about passing his driving test bite him on the backside. With an unwanted baby and an unresolvable love triangle testing the patience of our anti-heroes, this has probably been the bleakest series yet (tonight Mark seriously considers a one-way ticket to Argentina and a face transplant for the sake of his sanity). Still, its also been an absolute hoot. Unreported World Channel 4, 7.30pm The subject of Guatemalan bus drivers might seem a bit niche but violence and extortion certainly isnt. Drivers are being murdered at a rate of one every other day by the countrys highly organised criminal gangs, who earn millions out of the bus companies via extortion. As can be seen in this frightening report, its a situation that has seen the country descend into chaos. Her debut LP Love Tattoo was released to rapturous reviews, shes toured with Chuck Berry and is now gearing up for her biggest Dublin show to date Interview by Daragh Reddin I was told not to go near [Chuck Berry] because hed knock my head off. He came up and told me he was really impressed and wanted to shake my hand You sound like youre in traffic. Are you heading somewhere exciting? Im actually in a car in London with a lovely driver called Mike. I had a call from Jeff Beck who asked if Id come and sing on his new album so Im off to his studio and then its straight back to my studio to finish my own album off. How does the new album compare to your debut Love Tattoo? We actually recorded Love Tattoo in a little over two weeks. So its nice spending a little more time tweaking things. Ive written a helluva lot of songs and its great being in a position where you have too much rather than too little material. Theres less piano this time and itll be more guitar lead. Plus Ive got some friends in to help me out. Anyone famous? Well, I have Jools Holland in to play piano. He kindly came on board for the price of a bottle of gin. Your big break came on Later With... Jools Holland but Hollands drummer gave you a back-handed compliment when he said you were sexy, in a trashy way. Ha, ha. Yeah, the two of us were standing at the side of the stage and he shouted that across at me. He was wearing this fabulous multi-coloured suit with pink-lining at the time and I said, Well you look like a pimp, in a good way. It was all a bit of fun. Your musical influences are quite eclectic. How did someone raised on Dublin folk get into easy listening, rockabilly and jazz? My mam loved the crooners: Dean Martin, Nat King Cole. My brother Vincent was into Elvis and I stole his tapes one time and that was the start of it. Later I got into Billie Holiday, Patsy Cline, Hank Williams and, of course, Chuck Berry. You supported Chuck Berry in New York recently. Hasnt he a reputation for being a bit testy? I was told not to go near him because hed knock my head off but this all the women in the Liberties she had a great sense of style. They say no woman ever goes grey in the Liberties there must be something in the water. Do you get recognised back in the Liberties now? Ah, theyd know me but sure everybody knows everybody in the Liberties, whether youre famous or not. Theyd not treat me any different than they did ten years ago. You were one of the headliners for Arthurs Day. How was it? We had a whale of a time. We played the Academy and then did a secret gig in Bruxelles. I was brought up beside the Guinness brewery so the smell of the hops was always in my nose and theres nothing like that scent to let you know youre home. Are you nervous about playing The O2? Not at all. Bring it on. Imelda May plays The O2, East Link Bridge, North Wall Quay D1, December 22, 7pm, 42.50. Tel: 0818 719 300. www.imeldamay.com wasnt the case at all. He came up and told me he was really impressed with my music and wanted to shake my hand. I think he likes little women, though. So I may have had a small advantage. Have you met any other heroes? Jeff Beck is a hero, so Im delighted to be recording something with him. I had a good chat with Jimmy Page one evening too. It sounds like Im just name-dropping but you do meet famous people and its a bonus when they turn out to be lovely. A few weeks ago you put your back out. Are you on the mend? I have to get an operation but it looks like I wont have time until January so Im wearing a back brace in the meantime. Im an old workhorse though I just keep on going. Of course, the codeine helps. Your sense of style is quite distinctive. How did it come about? My mother was a dressmaker and like 16 metrolife Friday, October 23, 2009 index.html2.html3.html4.html5.html6.html7.html8.html9.html10.html11.html12.html13.html14.html15.html16.html17.html18.html19.html20.html21.html22.html23.html
