Mr Fox GIG Hypnotic Brass Ensemble CONCERT Fleetwood Mac Modeselektor, aka Berlin duo Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary (pictured) are nothing if not versatile. Having risen to prominence on Berlin label Bpitch Control with a series of gitchy techno releases, they then explored the world of crunk and ghetto with their 2005 debut album, Hello Mom. The follow up, 2007s Happy Birthday saw their sound veer further into a melting pot of techno, indie and hip- hop, with some references to Scooters happy hardcore. Having released an acclaimed album in collaboration with Apparats Sascha Ring under the Moderat guise this year, Gernot and Sebastian are now back doing what they excel at making and playing unpredictable yet entertaining electronic music. Tonight, The Button Factory, Curved Street, Temple Bar D2, 11pm, 24. Luke Slater is electronic musics own comeback man. The UK producer released an unparalleled body of work in the 1990s as 7th Plan, Clementine and most notably, Planetary Assault Systems. Then Slater made the cardinal error of trying to make a pop album and very quickly found himself without an audience. Having spent a few years in the wilderness, Slater returned with an excellent EP and album both confusingly called Temporary Suspension which capture a swing back in tastes towards leaner, hard-edged techno. Slater is playing live as Planetary Assault Systems and upcoming Berlin duo Ancient Methods, who have released a series of acclaimed records, complete the line-up at the capitals techno gig of the year. Sun, Earwiggle, Andrews Lane Theatre, Andrews Lane D2, 9pm, 18. It says a lot about Dublins standing within the international music community that pioneering label Warp have chosen the capital as one of the places to celebrate its 20th birthday. Despite our antiquated licensing laws, the Sheffield imprint, aided by long running promoter U:Mack, decamps to the Button Factory this weekend. While the line-up boasts performances from newer signings to the labels roster like the multi-talented Tim Exile, all eyes and ears will be on headline act Plaid. Andy Turner and Ed Handley will be playing a classics set, so expect to hear the best and most melodic bits from Not For Threes, Rest Proof Clockwork and Double Figure. Sun, The Button Factory, Curved Street, Temple Bar D2, 8pm, 25. Don Ready (Piven) is a used car salesman who turns ailing car lots around to make a ruthless profit. But womaniser Don loses his cool when he works for a car dealer with an attractive daughter (Jordana Spiro). Telling you any more about the half-hearted plot would be pointless, given this is a string of largely uninsightful comic set pieces with a decidedly nasty view of human nature. AS ALSO OUT: Saw VI (18) The horror franchises latest bound-to-be- worse-than-the-last-one instalment. Given hes been the only constant in a line-up that has changed countless times since the 1970s, its fitting that drummer Mick Fleetwood lent his surname to the legendary supergroup Fleetwood Mac. The much-documented backstage bickering, boozing and pill- popping should have seen the British/ American outfit implode sometime around the mid-1970s but, if anything, the relationship meltdowns and general dysfunction seemed to fuel their creativity. While subsequent albums would go on to sell by the truck-load theres little in their back catalogue to match 1977s Grammy-winning Rumours, an LP that spawned drive- time favourite Go Your Own Way and saw the groups metamorphosis from jobbing blues band to international pop icons complete. If previous shows on their current tour are anything to go by, Lindsey Buckingham, Mick Fleetwood et al have definitely buried the hatchet, and are happy to delve deep into their greatest hits package while giving recent albums, Behind The Mask and Say You Will, a wide berth. And when Stevie Nicks wraps her lived-in vocal chords around tracks like Rhiannon, Dreams and Gypsy, goose- bumps are guaranteed. Bill Clinton counts them as one of his favourite bands and thats good enough for us. I shouldnt be giving get this! Bounty Celebrity Mum Of The Year nominee Katie Price and her cage-fighting appendix, Alex Reid, yet more publicity but I confess to a morbid fascination with this poor mans performance art project. Predictably, choosing the day her divorce was set to be finalised, the Heat-seeking missile contrived another front page splash for the launch of Standing Out: My Look, My Style, My Life, her umpteenth tome to appear this year. Katie, youll recall, came as Marilyn Monroe as imagined by a Taiwanese manufacturer of inflatable dolls aimed at lonely old men? Reid as Jordan in the gold lam monstrosity she sprayed on for her post-Pete Ibizan party. Hard to choose but big Al looked marginally the less unsexy of the two. Keep it up guys! In grim times, we need all the laughs we can get. Keith Barker-Main PLANET CELEB Welcome to the world of Katie and Alex The brass band has thrown some pretty wild modern shapes Stateside. New Orleans has the sassy cover versions of the Hot 8 Brass Band; but Chicagos Hypnotic Brass Ensemble blast the form even further into the 21st century. The act includes the eight sons of Sun Ra Arkestra trumpeter Phil Cohran and while they may have been introduced as a cool embellishment (supporting the likes of Damon Albarns The Good, The Bad And The Queen and Blur), theyve definitely emerged as a main attraction. Hypnotic Brass are rip-roaring fun on record, as proved by this summers self-titled album, but they really demand to be experienced live. Its all about the way the brothers command the stage physically and fill the space musically, on four trumpets, two saxophones, two trombones and drums. The bands original material draws on their jazz heritage but they also give major props to hip-hop, Afrobeat and the bassline-heavy anthems of the warehouse party scene. These boys will huff and theyll puff and theyll blow this house down. Arwa Haider Tomorrow, The Button Factory, Curved Street D2, 8pm, 23.
