Bud goes to court again THE battle of the rival Budweiser beers flared up again yesterday with the US company claiming it had stolen a march on its old enemy, the Czech brewer. Their worldwide squabbles over their name began in 1911 and were thought to have been settled in the UK in 2000 when a directive ruled the two companies could share the names Bud and Budweiser. But the case is back in court after the US firm used a new European Directive on trademarks to renew hostilities. Teens had flashbacks after store staffs interrogationBy RAy mANAGhTWO teenage girls on a shopping trip to Dublin with their mothers were imprisoned and interro- gated in Debenhams and have suffered flashbacks of the incident, a court has heard. Barrister Seamus Breen said that Katie Ann Mas- terson, 16, and her friend, Stephanie Wynn, 14, were dragged by security through the companys Henry Street store into a back room. There they were detained and interrogated about a handbag one of them had bought, until their moth- ers turned up and secured their release, he said. Mr Breen told Justice Matthew Deery in the Cir- cuit Civil Court that the handbag in question was not one that was on sale in the Debenhams store. The court heard that Debenhams had tendered settlement offers of 10,501 to each of the girls, who are both from Ballinasloe, Co Galway. Mr Breen said that while the shopping party had stopped in Henry Street to watch a street theatre display in October 2007, the two girls had gone into Debenhams to buy a box of chocolates. Their mothers, he said, had related how the girls were viciously grabbed by the arms and subjected to an assault. They had been unlawfully detained and interrogated and had not been allowed to use their mobile phones to contact their mothers. Both girls had since suffered sleeplessness and flashbacks. On one occasion while walking through Galway city, Katie Ann had to be taken home after being startled by a security alarm. Mr Breen said Debenhams had made a settlement offer of 7,500 each and later increased it to 10,501, but the girls lawyers did not think this was enough. Proceedings were adjourned for two weeks.
