She plays Sligo Live music and arts festival this weekend Interview by Adam Hyland Music is the way we make a living. So come Christmas we like to just spin a few records, put our feet up and play Scrabble Are you looking forward to playing in Sligo? Ever been there before? No, Ive never been but I hear its beautiful and I have a few friends from around there so I am hoping to catch up with them. Youve come to Ireland many times whats the attraction? I have Irish roots and its great to connect with people who are very much like-minded. The Irish audience is a listening audience and music is a big part of the culture. So its a great experience to play, especially when the music is pared down to just me and a guitar, which is what I will be doing. Its very basic and that requires an audience interested in singer-songwriters, so Im counting on that. Were going to do a couple of Edith Piaf songs Ive just made a record of Piaf music. Last time you were here, your mother Kate performed with you. What was it like touring with both your husband, Brad Albetta, and your mother, Kate? Its great because they get along really well so it saves me a lot of trouble. And I can use them both for their talent and for inexpensiveness. I get a family discount. Who hogs the piano at the Christmas get-together nowadays? Well, I cook at Christmas. Someone needs to cook! Music is the way we make a living. So come Christmas we like to just spin a few records, put our feet up and play Scrabble. Whats in the pipeline can we expect a new album? We did a live record of Piaf songs a couple of months ago. Were rushing to get a package ready to have out in November, and then were going to do a couple of shows in London and Paris to accompany the album. Any plans to come to Dublin? Probably next year. I think the idea would be to promote the album but you know, one might get a little bored mastering this Piaf record for so long I feel like I never need to hear another Piaf song again, so we cant say that! Maybe its obvious but I think Antony And The Johnsons last album, The Crying Light, was really beautiful. I really like that he was able to talk about the environment we live in and he did it in a very non-pedantic and a very moving way. Which of your songs are you most proud of? Theres a track on my first album called Dont Forget, a basic love song, which is actually only one of two songs that has a chorus in it, and I enjoy singing it because it brings me back. Have you ever been attacked by an animal? No, Im glad to say. Im a city- dweller, so other than rats Im not confronted by many animals. No bites, no scars! Martha Wainwright plays Sligo Live at The Radisson, Sligo Town, Saturday, 8.30pm. www.sligolive.ie of over-dramatic French songs. Can anybody get bored of that? Ha ha. No, I guess not. Have you been writing while touring? I always find it easier to write at home. Im not terribly prolific, unfortunately. It takes me a while to get songs written. This summer I was distracted with a lot of different things. I was doing the Piaf record, and then writing the score for a ballet company. Generally, I go into the studio with songs written. Ive never had big budgets from record labels, so I have to prepare a lot. That being said, writing this music for the ballet was the first time I had pre-produced myself. That was my foray into being my own recordist. Hopefully, that will help on my next record, to be able to do stuff on my own as demo work. Whats your favourite song at the moment? (not your own) Its terrible Ive been singing and 16 metrolife Wednesday, October 21, 2009 index.html2.html3.html4.html5.html6.html7.html8.html9.html10.html11.html12.html13.html14.html15.html16.html17.html18.html19.html20.html21.html22.html23.html
