First up is the lot of the Irish coal miners who have for generations slaved deep underground in dangerous tunnels to eke out a living. Today the collieries lie abandoned, but the deadly legacy of the mines lives on. Definitely worth watching. Mine, all mine: The life of a coal miner is examined Autumnwatch 2009 BBC2, 9pm Kudos to Autumnwatch and to all those viewers who tuned in last week to make this programme more watched than Jonathan Rosss tedious love-in with Barbra Streisand. Forget our wet summers, windy springs and flat winters, autumn is the month when things really happen in nature, and the BBC crew led by Bill Oddie and Kate Humble are on hand to talk us through everything from nut harvests to the hibernation plans of mice. Fall asleep: Autumn means hibernation for some Film Of The Day Pat Garrett And Billy The Kid TG4, 9pm Sam Peckinpahs take on the infamous story of two friends on either side of the law is his slowest-moving work, but it is nonetheless a stunning, gritty piece of cinema. An aging Garrett, played by a magnificent James Coburn, is hired by wealthy cattle barons to track down and kill his former best friend, Billy The Kid, played by Kris Kristofferson. Jason Robards plays Governor Lew Wallace and even Bob Dylan, playing up his cowboy-era persona, gets a meaty part as Alias.
