I wanted you to be able to hear the nuts and bolts Your debut LP, The End of History, was a surprise hit. You must have been under a lot of pressure when it came to recording a follow-up... As a writer, theres always an amount of internal pressure anyway. External pressure is a variable it can be a quagmire. The external pressure is always there. You try not to get sucked into it. Youve said that all the touring you did in the US was a big influence on the new album. We probably toured about 30 states in America. Half of them twice. It was quite an amount of work. When you are a writer, you hold a mirror up the reflections become the work. I think the experience of travelling around America worked its way into the fabric of this record. I think this record is, I suppose, more outward looking. Have you gone and made a pop record, then? If The End Of History sounded rural, this one sounds like dimly lit back-streets it has quite a ragged edge to it. Its definitely a new furrow ploughed. I was pretty amazed with America. So much happened, its hard to take in. Only now, when people are asking me about it, is it starting to sink in. There was a lot of work a lot of touring. It sort of comes back to you in fragments. Did you bump into any of your idols while in the US? People like Lucinda Williams took me under their wing. I played with Steve Earle, David Byrne those kinds of people were around. In San Francisco, in the Golden Gate Park, we were walking around and we saw Emmylou Harris walking by. It was amazing. You new album is called Shadow Of An Empire a title that is open to interpretation. Shadow Of An Empire is a song I do on piano. Its the last track on the record. That song could become a lens to view the record through. The title seemed to fit. There are so many angles to what its saying, I havent really nailed one of them to the ground yet. the first time a lot of people heard about me. You can call that the start of the records life in a way to the greater world at least. That was the fuse lighting for most people. You grew up in Bray. Did that shape who you are as a songwriter? I think seaside towns have a particular feeling about them that you take with you. The seasons are very changeable. Very busy in summer. Quite empty in winter. Those things work their way into the fabric of your make-up somehow. Youre headlining Hard Working Class Heroes this weekend. Did you play the festival as a struggling up-and-comer? I never have. Id heard about it though. This time I hope to get around and see some of the other artists. Its good to have the focus a festival that is promoting bands from Ireland. Who knows what will come from it. Tickets for Hard Working Class Heroes are on sale now via www.hwch.net (40 for the weekend / 18.50 per day) You went to Abbey Road to finish the recording. That must have been a thrill. I mastered it in Abbey Road. There were no airs or graces about the whole thing. Everything was cut live. We really wanted the record to sound like a process. I wanted you to be able to hear the nuts and bolts. I didnt want something that was rounded off. I wanted a real, honest record, in the way its delivered and sung. It sounds as if youre worried about sounding overly glossy. That was a challenge. I suppose Ive become obsessed with keeping mistakes in: the crack in the voice, the natural ebb and flow in everything. You can hear it on records like Tonights The Night by Neil Young records where you can actually hear whats happening. Your were nominated for the 2007 Mercury Music Prize in Britain. What kind of effect did that have on your career?
