Irish sculptors works go for a record-breaking 300,000By ED CARTy The King: Part of the two- piece set which smashed previous records FIVe sculptures by the late Irish sculptor edward Delaney have been sold for a record 300,000 ten times the guide price. The artworks, which were kept in the garden of a Connemara house before being given to the Irish mu- seum of modern Art (Imma), only went for auction weeks before his death in September. An unnamed UK buyer bought the main piece, two bronze 2.5metre high statues King and Queen, which sold for 190,000, smashing the previous record for a single Irish sculpture by almost 100,000. Stuart Cole, director at Dublin-based auctioneers James Adams, said it was a shame Delaney was not alive to see the sale. Its a fitting tribute to Irelands most important sculptor of the 20th century, he said. We catalogued these works for the sale before his death, and its a shame he didnt live to see them sell for world record prices. The pre-sale estimates for the five lots started at a little more than 30,000. Delaney, a member of Aosdna an association of creative artists in Ireland, is best known for his Wolfe Tone statue at Stephens Green and Thomas Davis op- posite the front of Trinity College. The sculptures, which also included Anna, running Figure and Organic Form, had been owned by an old friend of Delaneys and kept in the garden in the 1970s and 1980s before being loaned to Imma. They were handed over to the Dublin-based auction- eers weeks before he died at the end of September. The previous world record for a piece of Irish sculp- ture at auction was 95,000 (103,000) for Fe mcWil- liams eve in December 2006. index.html2.html3.html4.html5.html6.html7.html8.html9.html10.html11.html12.html13.html14.html15.html16.html17.html18.html19.html20.html21.html22.html23.html
