But Derek Barker, editor of Dylan fanzine Isis, said: Its pretty good. He does what he wants and doesnt care what people think. Dylan has always enjoyed wrong- footing fans whether by going elec- tric, retiring after a motorbike crash or devoting albums to Judaism or Christianity. His latest move puts him alongside other legends who em- braced Christmas in music, such as John Lennon, Johnny Cash and Elvis. The good causes which will benefit from the album are the UN World Food Programme, Feeding America and British charity Crisis. Its like a boozy street person staggering DANIEL ODONNELL angelically crooning Silent Night, it isnt. A great songwriter is making a sur- prise bid for the Christmas No.1 with just one drawback: his voice. Bob Dylan once described as sing- ing sandpaper has swapped Mr Tam- bourine Man for Jingle Bells on a char- ity Christmas album on sale this week. But some diehard Dylanologists are cringing as the 68-year-old merrily murders classics such as Have Your- self A Merry Little Christmas. Indeed, his croak of Shall I play for you? in Little Drummer Boy would perhaps have even the Virgin Mary slamming the stable door.
