ROSS McDONAGH has some tips No need to go to the wall N ever mind the outside; its whats on the inside that counts and thats not just something ugly people say. While the exterior of any home can be spruced up by a lick of paint and a sweeping brush, its the interior where the admiration or the scorn of visitors is generated. Redecorating a room can be a real chore, but sometimes a small change can be just as refreshing as a complete transformation. If you want to give a room a new look but dont have the time/money/energy to do a complete revamp, a feature wall may be just the answer. It takes guts but changing the colour of one wall from a uniform shade to a strong, bold colour can completely alter the atmosphere of a space without you having to undertake a total overhaul. Dulux offer some helpful tips on creating a feature wall on its website www.dulux.ie. Feature walls, it claims, are all about making a statement and adding interest, so the wall you choose should reflect this. Choose a wall with a point of interest, such as a fireplace or chimney breast, bookcase, alcove or interesting architectural feature. If your room is a simple box choose the TV wall or one behind your bed. Next you need to choose a colour and you must be brave. An Eggshell White wall in a Cotton Cream room isnt very exciting go for something on the complete other end of the spectrum. Opposites attract, and the bolder the better. If you are unsure, the time honoured trick of tester pots on a hidden area is the way to go. And dont worry about getting all those edges straight and not bleeding into other walls its easier than you think. Dulux advises: - Buy paint brushes with an angled edge - Dont load your brush with too much paint and starting away from the edge slowly work the paint up to the required line - To gain the best control when cutting in it is best to hold it brush like a pen. - If painting the whole room, paint the pale coloured walls first, then paint up to it with the darker shade/feature wall colour. Make sure you apply two coats of your feature wall colour, this will ensure you get a strong, intense finish, said the aptly named Matt Gray, Dulux painting and decorating expert.
