Order a free O Guide aims to stop bullying of gay students at school A GUIDE for secondary school principals on pupils sexual orientation was yesterday described as a step forward in the education system. Tackling homophobic bullying and providing lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students with a safe and supportive environment are among the key issues dealt with in the handbook. Latest figures show a quarter of all LGBT students have been threatened by other pupils. More than half were also called abusive names. The guide, produced by the Department of Education and the Gay and Lesbian Equality Network (Glen), will be used to develop zero-tolerance policies on homophobic bullying. Glens Sandra Gowran said it was a step forward for schools. It will benefit all school- goers, by creating environments in schools that are more accepting of difference and diversity, she said. THE Bulgarian who discovered Boyzone star Stephen Gatelys body spoke last night of his distress at the singers death. Georgi Petrov Dochev also denied ru- mours he had been in bed with Gatelys husband, Andrew Cowles, when the star died. The 25-year-old said he had experi- enced difficulty sleeping since he found the singer slumped on a sofa in the apart- ment which Gately shared with his hus- band in Majorca. Speaking from his own flat near the Spanish islands capital, Palma, Mr Do- chev said: I almost have not slept since this happened. I found Stephen dead and I woke his husband. Stephen was white and very cold when I found him. I am still nervous and really upset. Mr Dochev spoke out after a newspa- per claimed he and Mr Cowles, 32, left the master bedroom at the flat at about 1pm on Saturday and then found Gate- lys body. Mr Cowles, who married Gately in a ceremony in Las Vegas in 2006, made a desperate attempt to revive him with mouth-to-mouth resuscitation before calling emergency services. The trio are reported to have met at the Black Cat gay nightclub in Palma. Mr Dochev confirmed he had already talked to police but he refused to discuss the re- ports detailing the hours before Gately was found dead. Mr Dochev said: This is not some- thing I want to talk about. Andy and I have been interviewed by the police. But I dont want to say anything else without checking first with him. Mr Kean, spoke to the singers mother Margaret this morning, and said: We are not saying he was not drinking but eight hours is not something we accept. The solicitor said Gately had been in the apartment with Mr Cowles until after midnight on Friday when he travelled to Palma. A close family member spoke to Gate- ly at 12.30am Spanish time on Saturday as he was getting ready to leave. It is understood Gately spent several hours socialising and was back in the apartment before 6am Spanish time.
