Television What To Watch Money matters: David McWilliams takes stock Todays highlights With Adam Hyland Pick Of The Day Addicted To Money RT1, 10.15pm The global economy has gone into cardiac arrest and David McWilliams takes us on a road-trip through crisis country to give us his diagnosis in this interesting series. This week, he looks at the damage caused by our addiction to money and concludes that there is nowhere to hide. He visits Iceland and Honduras to see just what is happening elsewhere, which is an interesting venture, but then one also gets the impression that while we are drowning, he is doing little more than describing the water. Horizon BBC2, 9pm The days are getting shorter and colder and as we approach the party season now is an appropriate time to air this documentary about the dangers of excessive alcohol intake. Whether it be the occasional tipple, binge-drinking, or full-blown alcoholism, Dr John Marsden examines the damage we do to ourselves, and sometimes others, when we over-indulge in the demon drink. The Grammy award-winning singer has sold more than 20million records, first with Shalamar, and later as a solo star. Most remember her for the classic, A Night to Remember. Her new album, The Makeover, is out now Interview by Graeme Green I feel more energetic than I ever did at 25. I feel better about myself, I still have a childlike passion and I dont look 50! Whitneys back, Madonnas back, youre back its like the 1980s never went away. We never did go away. Madonnas been churning them out pretty steadily and progressively. Ive done the same, but without the spotlight shes had. Ive been growing and evolving all along. Your song, Looking For A New Love, coined the phrase hasta la vista, baby. Who does it better you or Arnie? Me. When I was writing the lyrics, I was p***** off at my boyfriend, but it was the delivery of it with the baby at the end that made it the signature. When Arnie said it, I thought, My God, thats my line I nearly jumped out of my seat. Its attributed to both of us now but he got it from me. Do you miss the 1980s? It was a fun time, there was a lot of great music. But Im a person that likes to be in the now. Were you glad to see the back of big mobile phones, shoulder pads...? I never thought Id see the resurgence of monstrous shoulder pads but they are back in full effect. A lot of the elements are. People say Rihannas style, for instance, reminds them of me. Does the resurgence of 1980s fashion mean you can just dig out your old wardrobe? No, that would be a major fashion mistake. Obviously a lot of fashion right now is influenced by the 1980s, but youve got to bring it in a way that feels new. Dont go in your closet and pull out that old jacket with those old shoulder-pads youve got to get a new jacket. The cut is different. Is it true your Shalamar band-mate, Jeffrey Daniel, taught Michael Jackson how to moonwalk and body-pop? I watched Oprah Winfrey do a recap of her interview with Michael Jackson from 1994 recently and, way about electronic music as you did about disco and soul in the old days? Theyre totally different for me. I was inspired when I first worked with [electro producers] 4Hero. I was exposed to a lot of the underground scene. I see this music as very different from the disco era. I get a different feeling if I listen to Donna Summer than if I listen to Calvin Harris or Groove Armada. Youve just turned 50, is that right? Yes, I did. And, since youre not right here in front of me, I cant slap you around the head for asking. How was the last half century for you? I feel more energetic than I ever did at 25, I feel better about myself and I still have a childlike passion for everything that I continue to work for. And I dont look 50! Are you looking forward to the next 50? Absolutely. And Im sure shoulder pads will come back around again. when she asked him about that, he said he learned it from some black kids in the ghetto. But Ive heard that Jeffrey gave him a few pointers too. Did Michael return the favour and teach you all a few moves? No, but when I won the Grammy award for best new artist, Michael Jackson was the first person to greet me when I came off stage. He ran up to me and gave me a big hug and a kiss. It nearly eclipsed the moment of winning the award, which was probably one of the greatest moments in my life. I used to write Michael Jackson fan mail, Ive always loved him. So I didnt get the dance lessons, but I did get the kiss, and Im quite happy to have that. Are you still looking for a new love? No, Im not. Im single but Im not looking, not really. Your new albums got a dance sound. Do you feel the same 14 metrolife Tuesday, October 13, 2009
