See Page 5 Missing Aisling found in drainFAMILY and friends of Aisling Symes were last night coming to terms with their loss after a childs body was found in a storm drain 20m away from where she disappeared a week ago. Insp Gary Davey confirmed the body found was that of Ais- ling. He said police believe the death of the youngster is a case of misadventure. The two-year-old, whose father, Alan, is originally from Co Waterford, went missing while playing outside her grandpar- ents home in the West Auckland suburb of Henderson in New Zealand. There were fears she had been kidnapped. Insp Davey said the drain had previously been searched by both the police and the little girls family, but they failed to see her. You need to bear in mind that she was found 36m from the manhole and a metre-and-a-half underground, Insp Davey said, adding that it was raining at the time and there was water flowing in the drain, which might have swept her along. He said he believed the emergency services had done all they could to find her. Neighbours, were asking how a child missing for a week and feared taken by kidnappers could be found only metres from where she disappeared. They reckon they searched everything twice, but shes right under their noses, one resident said. I truly hoped we would find her alive and bring her home to her family. Sadly that is not to be the case, he said. While declining to rule out foul play, Insp Davey said he be- lieved the little girls body had been there all along. However, Waitakere Mayor Bob Harvey said the only wayAis- ling could have got into the drain was through a manhole cover, which he believes would have been impossible for her to open by herself. I would have struggled with it myself, he said. Aislings parents, Alan and Angela, are said to be absolutely distraught. Messages of sympathy last night poured into the fa- cebook page they had set up in their effort to find her.
