Plastic recyclers will turn rubbish into dining plates and showers will use filtered rainwater, it is predicted. Eco-conscious home designers will be driven by climate change and rising energy prices to design a range of eco-friendly products. The Future Laboratory, who wrote the Conscious Home report for UK retailer John Lewis, say the changes will mark one of the most seismic cultural shifts since mass electrification in the 1920s and 30s. Appliances will also create an energy chain, feeding off each others power. BY JOANNE AHERN 63% failing to wash out recyclablesMORE than 60 per cent of people dont clean out recyclable food containers be- fore putting them in the bin, it was re- vealed yesterday. Research carried out by Repak for Re- cycling Week found that 63 per cent of people dont clean out takeaway contain- ers before putting them in the recycle bin, with 49 per cent guilty when recy- cling sauce and jam jars. Repak estimates 20,000 tonnes of in- correct material is put into recycling bins annually. On the plus side, Dubliners are the best recyclers in the country, with 58 per cent of the capitals residents claim- ing to recycle. Some 99 per cent of people claim to recycle from the kitchen and 54 per cent claim to recycle from the bathroom. Some 42 per cent of people now claim that recycling is part of their everyday household routine. Plastic drinks bottles topped the table of claimed recycled items at 87 per cent, followed by glass containers at 83 per cent and cardboard at 79 per cent. However, 43 per cent do not recycle foil trays, 40 per cent do not recycle bis- cuit tins and 37 per cent do not recycle detergent bottles. Dr Andrew Hetherington, CEO of Repak, said 97 per cent of people in Ire- land claim to recycle regularly and last year 65 per cent of all used packaging was recycled. He added: Contaminated used packag- ing can undo the great efforts of house- holders and could lead to an increase in recycling costs.
