Liverpool warning over takeover Prince Faisal bin Fahd bin Abdullah al-Saud has not ruled out a complete takeover of Liverpool but will not consider such a move until debt levels at Anfield are more manageable. The Saudi prince has been involved in discussions with George Gillett, co-owner of the reds, about buying at least a part-share in the club. But, according to his advisor Barry Didato, Prince Faisals interest could heighten if the current debt of 275million is lowered. His highness does not need to be a majority shareholder and a takeover has not been his focus, said Didato. The debt has to be at a manageable level before Prince Faisal would invest and the current level is high. Gillett and Hicks reduced the clubs debt in July but the American pair have a strained relationship. Didato added: His highness would not want to get involved, he is not a marriage counsellor. JAMIE Carragher admits his displays for Liverpool this season have not been good enough. Im not playing well personally. I need to hit better form, he said. Meanwhile, Fernando Torres is not thought to be seriously injured after limping out of training with Spain. premier league Hoops out to keep up pace against Derry SHAmrock rovers can consolidate their two-point lead at the top of the Premier Division table with victory over an injury-hit Derry city at the Brandywell tonight. The Hoops will be without the suspended Pat Sullivan, sent off in last weeks 1-0 win over champions Bohemians in Tallaght. Pat Flynn is the automatic replacement while both defender ian Bermingham and striker Gary Twigg will have late fitness tests on groin injuries. Derry boss Stephen kenny will be hoping his team can regroup after two defeats but must cope with an injury list of key players Sammy morrow, Tommy Stewart, clive Delaney Steven Gray, Peter Hutton, Ger oBrien and mark Farren. Second-placed Bohs have midfielder Gary Deegan suspended for the clash with relegation-threatened Drogheda at Dalymount. But boss Pat Fenlon will otherwise be able to call on a full squad after resting key players in Tuesdays Setanta cup draw with coleraine. league of ireland Respect: De Rossi (inset) holds Trapattoni in high regard Soccer Rep of iRelanD v iTaly Trapattoni earns praise from ItaliansBy peTeR mageeREpubLIC of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni could not live up to expecta- tions as the coach of Italy but the Azzurri players still hold him in high regard. Italy will come up against Trapattoni tomorrow night when the teams meet for the second time in World Cup quali- fying for South Africa 2010. Its going to be nice to see Trapattoni again, said Juventus defender Nicola Legrottaglie. He was the first coach to believe in me, to give me a call-up and to make me play. If we go to Ireland for the crucial game, it means that Trapat- toni and his team have done an excep- tional qualifying campaign. Trapattoni coached Italy at the 2002 World Cup and at Euro 2004 but on each occasion they made an early exit. However, he has the full respect of Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi. He is a coach that has done so many great things in his career, De Rossi said. Now he has taken Ireland to high levels. He has always achieved results. A draw will be enough for Italy to clinch first place in Group Eight and book a place at the World Cup, while Ire- land can cut the Italians lead to just one point if they win the match. While for Ireland this is the last chance, for us it isnt, De Rossi said. If we were to achieve qualification in the last game against Cyprus, it doesnt mean that it would be less deserved. u JuvENTuS insist they acted within doping rules over claims Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro failed a drug test and the club will assist with an Italian Olym- pic Committee investigation. Juve claim the defender, who is suspended for to- morrows game against Ireland, failed the test because of an injection after an insect sting last August which could have been fatal had their medical team not acted. out to impress: St ledger MIDDLESbROuGH defender Sean St Ledger will win his sixth international cap tomorrow night partnering Richard Dunne in the centre of the Irish defence in the vital Group Eight World Cup qualifying tie against Italy at Croke park and is determined to impress on his first appearance in Dublin. I have never been inside Croke park, but I have been past it. Its an absolute monster of a stadium and with nearly 80,000 fans present, I am sure the atmosphere will be great, especially with it being a night kick-off and the fans having been in the pubs beforehand. It is bound to be nice and loud, said the 24-year-old. A huge game against the World Cup holders in front of a huge crowd its what all footballers dream of, especially me. And a chance of going to the World Cup thats the highest pinnacle of anyones football career. And weve got a great chance of doing that, a better chance than weve had in recent years. Weve got to take it in both hands and grasp it. St Ledger has huge respect for the Italians but will not be intimidated when he takes his place in the Irish defence. Theyve just got such good players ones that are playing in the Champions League regularly, he added. but weve got great players too.
