D Friday, October 9, 2009 METRO 11 Typhoon Melor strikes Japan TYPHOON Melor hit Japans main island Honshu yesterday with winds of up to 198kmh, disrupting flights and trains and closing some factories. However, damage was much less than had been feared. Nine thousand people across the country were forced from their homes and a road bridge collapsed in floods in Aichi, west of Tokyo. Roofs were blown off about 50 buildings in Ibaraki, north of Tokyo, but the main disruption in the capital was from train cancellations that left commuters stranded. Three men to float their boat down the Shannon THE BBC series Three Men In A Boat is making its way to Ireland. The Three Men, comedians Dara OBriain, Griff Rhys-Jones and Rory McGrath will film the show travelling from Dublin to Shannon by boat. They will start in Dublin and travel in an old Guinness barge down the Grand Canal, crossing by land to the Royal Canal and then joining up with the Shannon, before finishing in Limerick. This is one of the most popular shows in the UK. It offers a great opportunity to showcase the lakelands and inland waterways of Ireland, said Filte Irelands Kevin Kidney. The Three Men will experience a variety of things to do and, of course, the warmth of the local welcome.Boatman: OBriain Ireland gives 520,000 in disaster aidIRISH taxpayers yesterday pledged more than 500,000 to the victims of the ty- phoon and earthquake in southeast Asia and the Pacific. Children whose lives have been devas- tated by the natural disasters will benefit from the funding, donated through Irish Aid, the Governments overseas devel- opment programme. Peter Power, Minister of State for Overseas Development, said the 520,000 funding was in addition to a separate 500,000 pledged earlier this month. Mr Power said he was deeply concerned for the people who were af- fected by the recent natural disasters. In choosing our partners for this extra funding, I am directing our support to those agencies working closely with children, who are often most severely af- fected by these types of disasters, he added. A total of 200,000 will go to Plan Ire- land, working with children in the Phil- ippines. Around 150,000 will go to Unicef, and 170,000 will be allocated to the Governments development pro- gramme in Vietnam in response to a rapid assessment of the damage from Ty- phoon Ketsana in central Vietnam.
