GOOGLE and Yahoo! have become the latest targets of a massive indus- try-wide e-mail phishing scam that stole the passwords of tens of thou- sands of Hotmail users. The first list of 10,000 Hotmail users and their passwords was found on de- bugging website Pastebin two days ago. However, it only included ad- dresses beginning with A or B, sug- gesting there could be more accounts. Hotmail owner Microsoft said the details were obtained through a phish- ing scam, using fake websites to trick people into handing over passwords. A second list of more than 20,000 addresses was discovered yesterday, containing AOL, Yahoo!, Google and Hotmail accounts, indicating the scam is on an industry-wide scale. A Microsoft spokesman said: We are aware that some Windows Live Hotmail customers credentials were acquired illegally by a phishing scheme and exposed on a website. An investigation into the issue determined that this is not a breach of any Microsoft servers, he said. A Google spokesman said the com- pany had forced password resets on the affected accounts.
