It is desperately trying to locate the owners of more than 5,000 faulty ap- pliances, after six people were killed by carbon monoxide poisoning in Ire- land and the UK. If the grills on affected models are used while the grill door is closed, dangerous levels of the odourless and colourless gas carbon monoxide build up, which when inhaled, can kill within two minutes. More than 7,500 affected models were sold in Ireland, but to date only around 2,000 have been located. There have been six deaths to date in the UK and Ireland and we are putting a major push on finding the remaining 5,300 cookers, said Ann Fitzgerald, chief executive of the NCA. Despite the efforts of the manufac- turers, including mail-outs with Bord Gis bills and direct liaison with re- tailers and consumers to locate these cookers, only 2,200 have been located to date. The cookers can be made safe by minor adjustments. The NCA can be contacted at www.consumerconnect.ie or by call- ing 1890 432 432.
