GAA The chairman of the Louth GAA board has lambasted clubs for their unwillingness to provide qualified candidates for the managerial vacancy within the county, despite their readiness to criticise former boss eamonn Mceneaney. Paddy Oliver has revealed the position will almost certainly be filled by a non-native and is hoping the process will be completed in the next fortnight. I would like to have a manager by then but whether I will or not is another thing, said Oliver. At the stage were in, were not going to get one immediately. There were a few people nominated from the clubs but that led to nothing. Now its a case of people from outside the county being interested and we will be making contact with them to see if they fit the right criteria. The response of the clubs has disappointed the committee and Oliver pulls no punches in offering his criticism. The level of interest in the job from within the county certainly doesnt match the level of interest from outside the county. Its interesting the way clubs talk about the Louth team and the management that has gone, that they didnt provide many alternatives when eamonn Mceneaney retired. Theyre quick to tell you whats wrong but not so quick to come up with possible solutions. Louth chief critical of clubs in boss hunt SOCCER rep of ireland v italy ITALy need just one point to qualify for the World Cup but coach Marcello Lippi insists they will be playing to win in Dublin on Saturday. The world champions lead Group eight, four points clear of the second-placed Republic of Ireland with two games remaining. Its very important for us to qualify on Saturday, said Lippi (pictured). Not only from my point of view but for everyone involved. This is the most important week for us in the last two years. There are two results out of a possible three that will benefit us in Dublin. We need a point but it will be a mistake to play for the draw, we have to play our game. Italy end their qualifying campaign against Cyprus in Parma next Wednesday and Lippi added: If we dont get the result in Dublin then we will go out on Wednesday to claim three points. The Azzurri will be without captain Fabio Cannavaro for this weekends showdown with the Juventus defender serving a one-match ban. Midfielder Claudio Marchisio is also doubtful for the encounter as he is struggling with a minor knee injury. However, the 70-year-old italian feels the rules should be changed to allow all nations to compete on an even playing field after Fifa an- nounced last week that the runners- up showdowns will be seeded. ireland, who could yet win Group eight, will secure second place at least if they manage to claim two points from their final two games against leaders and world champi- ons italy and Montenegro in the next eight days. but, with the likes of France and portugal among those countries with bigger reputations struggling to qualify, they are unlikely to be among the seeds. Trapattoni said: We know what sort of team we are, we know which position we are in the ranking. but, for me, it is not important because big teams can lose. Now i am sure our team is confident and, in football, anything can happen. if italy lose the last two games, maybe we qualify [automatically]. but if we go into the play-offs, we have high morale and we can com- pete with any team. if we play in the play-offs, we will not be afraid of any team. For me, it is not important because we can play against good teams we will see on Saturday against italy. i am confident against all teams. but for all his confidence that ire- land will give as good as they get if they land a two-leg shoot-out against one of europes aristocrats with a trip to South Africa at stake, Trapattoni has called for the rules to be changed. He said: in the future, Fifa and uefa have to think about changing this rule. Four or five years ago, the big clubswantedtocreateasuperleague, but it was dangerous for football and they gave up on it. That would have been the death of football. This situation in the future must change, because every country has the right to qualify. This draw must be open to give the same opportunity to everybody. index.html2.html3.html4.html5.html6.html7.html8.html9.html10.html11.html12.html13.html14.html15.html16.html17.html18.html19.html20.html21.html22.html23.html
