But what if you were joined by an unexpected visitor who had you on the menu? Just askArctic touristAndy Rouse. The 44-year-old was sitting down to lunch on his cruise liner when a polar bear poked its head through a porthole and tried to tuck in. The animal, which had been attracted by the smell of soup waft- ing from the galley, wandered right up to the ice-bound ship. She stuck around long enough for the photographer, from Cardiff, to take these amazing pictures but didnt get anything to eat. It was a truly magical experience to be on the ice with the bears and they rewarded us with some spec- tacular sightings, said Mr Rouse. The chance encounter took place last June in the Arctic islands of Svalbard, where the bears are a fairly common site. But experts have warned the car- nivores, which weigh up to 680kg (1,500lb), could be wiped out by global warming within 100 years. By AidAn RAdnedge
