METRO Tuesday, October 6, 2009 D Jab could wean addicts off coke AN EXPERIMENTAL vaccine against cocaine addiction could be used to wean users off the drug, researchers have discovered. In a US trial of the vaccine, many stopped taking cocaine or reduced their consumption after having the jab. Of the 55 participants who completed the course of active treatment, 38 per cent attained high enough blood antibody levels to combat cocaine dependency. The research was conducted at Yale University School of Medicine and involved 115 addicts. Mr Gormley was responding to ODonoghue: Plans to reveal all Gormley: Culture of extravagance Petrol attack woman gets three years A WOMAN who doused her father as well as another woman holding her 18-month-old infant with petrol has been jailed for three years by Limerick Circuit Court. Majella McCarthy, 26, of Galway Road, Ennis, was convicted by a jury last July of three counts of assault. She poured petrol over her father, John, at the family home at Spanish Point Road, Miltown Malbay, in Co Clare last March. McCarthy then went outside to a parked car, opened the back door and poured petrol over a mother and her 18-month-old daughter. When asked by Garda why she did this, the woman replied that she was upset because her father had got a barring order against her. Sentencing her yesterday, Judge Sen Donnabhin said the option of placing her in any setting other than prison was not open to him, as she is and will remain a danger to others because of her behaviour. He said the nasty and dangerous assaults on her father and, more alarmingly, on a mother and her young child were a deliberate action resulting from wilful and unpredictable behaviour. Judge Donnabhin imposed a further six months for an assault on a garda during her court appearance.
