An explosive opener gets the action going nicely, theres a promising supporting cast and when the script throws up the odd howler, Carlyle does at least lend the lines a quiet dignity. Grimefighters UTV, 7.30pm Kim and Aggie have a lot to answer for: namely, our obsession with other peoples filth. Basically, this is an excuse to stare open-mouthed at muck more specifically, a north London flat thats been used as a giant cat litter tray. Or, if that doesnt get you excited, you can watch an enforcement officer called John shift a shipping container thats been dumped in a car park in Grimsby. Grim indeed. Shes now on tour promoting an album of covers and plays CrawDaddy tonight Interview by Adam Hyland Theres a certain lust for life that I have that feels very prominent in general Irish behaviour... When I get there, I feel less like a vibrating crazy person Youre here quite often why do you think you strike such a chord with Irish audiences? I really appreciate the high level of energy that I feel in Ireland. Theres a certain lust for life, for lack of a better term, that I have that feels very prominent in general Irish behaviour. Im sorry, I dont know if that is true, but I know that when I get there, I feel less like a vibrating crazy person. Do you get to hang out in Dublin when you visit? I have done quite a lot of walking around in Dublin, which is wonderful, because you find yourself in all sorts of places that youd never know about if you looked up where you were supposed to go. When was the last time you got lost in Dublin? The great thing is that you can just ask anyone the way and theyll tell you. My mom always told me never to talk to strangers, so that was the first thing I wanted to do, and I do it as much as possible. They tend to talk back to you in Dublin, which is great. You are promoting a covers album on this tour, but is there a song or artist you wouldnt touch with a barge pole? I really feel like music is free and if you feel it, it is part of you. Theres no music or genre that I havent liked at some point in my life. There are songs that I dont know if I would try to cover because I like them too much, or I just want to be the person who wrote or sang it too much. Any that you would consider sacrilege to even try to cover? I just wouldnt want to bring a new angle to any song I love. For instance, I really wanted to do Shes Out Of My Life by Michael Jackson. This was before he died. But I ended up saying, This is ridiculous, I just want to be him on this song. The vocal performance is so beautiful and moving, so I scrapped it. The new album has quite a I put more thought into is how to make the guys Im on stage with look like they are in the same band as me. Is there any current song you wish you had written? That song My Neighbour by Gnarls Barkley, and also Whos Gonna Save My Soul from the same record. Those songs are fantastic. If I could sing like anybody else in the world, it would be Cee-Lo [one half of duo Gnarls Barkley]. He is the greatest living singer in my opinion. Whats the strangest thing youve ever had thrown at you on stage? Ive had underwear thrown at me, which is always fantastic. It wasnt soiled, so thats a bonus. I was opening for Morrissey a long time ago and you know Morrissey fans are known as extremely pro- Morrissey and I had a tampon thrown at me. I thought it was so funny. My reaction was Oh thanks, I could use this later! Its so funny. I mean, you go into your bag, fish out a tampon, and throw it at someone? cheeky cover [a pair of hands covering a naked womans behind] who is that? Thats my friend Angie Pontani, a burlesque performer. Its a cover of another cover. ODonnell Levy did a record in the 1970s called Everything I Do Gonna Be Funky, and he had a cover very similar to that, of his hands on a womans backside. I remember seeing that cover when I was young and just thinking it was very racy. So when I was trying to work out what I would do I thought I should do my version of that record cover, but use my own hands. Yes, those are my hands. You always have a certain style on stage. How much thought goes into how you look? I care about the way the show is presented. It is a show, after all. But I naturally love dressing up. Im still a little girl in that way. I also like things a bit flashy. I put thought into it. What 14 metrolife Tuesday, October 6, 2009
