hope for cash-strapped Pompey CRISIS club Portsmouth could be taken over again after Sulaiman al-Fahim who had promised to inject 50million into the club entered negotiations to sell his majority shareholding. A consortium led by Saudi property tycoon Ali Al-Faraj is set to buy the majority of Al-Fahims stake after reportedly supplying the 5m bridging loan needed to pay wages after some players were not paid last week. After Hassan Yebdas goal saw Pompey beat Wolves 1-0 at Molineux on Saturday for their first points of the season, Al-Fahim said: I think by Monday or Tuesday [Al- Faraj] will be on the board. His consortium will be a major shareholder. And I will keep a minority. Al-Fahim is set to meet representatives of Al-Faraj today. Pompey chief executive Peter Storrie has been key to bringing in Al-Faraj and added: Portsmouth were completely skint. When it appeared funding from Sulaiman wouldnt arrive in time to stop the club from being in a perilous situation we had to do something. The deal should go through [this] week. PATRICE EVRA insists Manches- ter United must improve massively if they are to retain the Premier League title. United only salvaged a 2-2 home draw with Sunderland when left- back Evras injury-time shot took a wicked deflection off Anton Ferdi- nand and into the net. And despite United losing for- wards Cristiano Ronaldo and Car- los Tevez in the summer, Evra says it is their defence that needs work. I am worried that we are not keeping clean sheets, said the 28- year-old France international. I am not happy about it because if you want to win the league you have to keep clean sheets. Last year we only conceded 21 goals. We cant concede more than that this season. And Evra claims the champions must take a long, hard look at them- selves over international break be- tween now and their next game with Bolton on October 17. Sir Alex Fergusons side had to come from behind twice to rescue a point against the Black Cats and Evra admitted: It was a big disappoint- ment. It is very frustrating because it looked like we had no energy or pow- er. It was just very poor. I dont know if we even deserved a point. United were rocking after seven minutes when the in-form Darren Bent fired Sunderland in front. But Dimitar Berbatov levelled six minutes after the interval with a superb bicycle kick, only for Ken- wyne Jones to re-establish the Black Cats lead with a header. Former Red Devil Kieran Rich- ardson was sent off for a second booking, leaving the unlucky Fer- dinand to deflect in Evras shot to make the final score 2-2 four min- utes into stoppage time. Visiting boss Steve Bruce could not believe United had again scored a crucial goal in time added on. That is the mark of champions, he said. At the top of that is the Ayatollah [Ferguson] who sits and watches it. That is what he has brought to the football club. They never give in. Referee Wiley leaves Ferguson fit to burst REFEREE Alan Wiley has come under fire from Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson following Saturdays 2-2 draw with Sunderland at Old Trafford. He was not fit enough, fumed Ferguson. Its an indictment of our game. You see referees abroad who are as fit as butchers dogs. He wasnt fit. He was taking 30 seconds to book a player. He was needing a rest. It was ridiculous. He didnt add on any time for [Uniteds injury-time] goal. He was also walking up the pitch for the second goal needing a rest. Below par: Uniteds Evra tries to stop Jordan Henderson weekend scoreboard soccer PREMIER LEAGUE BY PAUL MURPHY EvERTOn boss David Moyes praised goalscorer and stand-in captain Leon Osman despite seeing his side held by Stoke at Goodison Park. Osman (pictured), captain because of injuries to Phil neville and Joseph Yobo, grabbed an outstanding second-half equaliser after Robert Huth had put Stoke ahead with a fine header his first goal for the club since moving from Middlesbrough in the summer. Moyes said: Leon was terrific as captain, its a role he has had a few times when people have been injured. He had a shot just before he scored that went miles wide. So he had big balls to try the same thing again. He deserves credit for showing that sort of courage. Moyes hails Osman as Toffees are held dikgacois card has hodgson seeing red FULhAM manager Roy hodgson hit out at referee Phil Dowds decision to send off Kagoshi Dikgacoi against West ham. The South African was given his marching orders shortly before half-time in his full league debut after an off-the- ball clash with Scott Parker. hodgson was furious Dikgacoi (pictured) was sent off when Parker only received a yellow card. I have a problem getting my head around two players nose to nose and one of them sent off for violent conduct, said hodgson. Junior Stanislas snatched a point for the hammers with an injury-time equaliser after Danny Murphy and Zoltan Gera had cancelled out Carlton Coles opener to give the visitors the lead. west ham .....2 fulham ............0 everton........1 stoke...............1 Picture: AFP
