Ref: C Thomson RangERS 2 CELtIC 1 Two Kenny Miller goals slashed Celtics lead at the summit of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League to a single point as Rangers claimed victory in the first old Firm derby of the season. The striker returned to haunt his former club with two early goals to put the Scottish champions in the driving seat at Ibrox. Aiden McGeady did manage to pull a goal back from the penalty spot but his strike was not enough to prevent Tony Mowbrays first derby as Celtic boss ending in defeat. Shaun Maloney had an early chance on goal that Allan McGregor did well to block but Rangers surged into the lead with just eight minutes gone, taking advantage of shocking defending from Celtic. Kris Boyd slipped a pass through for Miller, who forced his way past Stephen McManus and Glenn Loovens before dispatching past Artur Boruc as Ibrox erupted. Miller found the back of the net again when a Steven whittaker ball broke for Miller who shrugged off Loovens before beating Boruc a second time. McGeady stepped up to claim his first ever goal at Ibrox from the spot after a foul on debutant Zheng Zhi as Celtic halved the gap by the interval. Both sides looked dangerous after the break but Maloney squandered the best opportunity to restore parity as he fired inches wide when he looked certain to score. Mowbray blames defensive lapses CeltiC manager tony Mowbray admitted he was unhappy with his defenders after they gifted Kenny Miller at least one of his goals in Rangers 2-1 win at ibrox. Glenn loovens was certainly at fault for the second goal as Miller brushed off his challenge to beat keeper Artur Boruc, but there was also uncertainty in the Celtic backline for the first as Miller ran into space to score. We allowed them to score, Mowbray said. there was a lot of quality in our side and yet we find ourselves having lost the game. the bottom line is, ive been critical over the last few weeks, hoping to get a reaction and yet the mistakes are still there. McIlroy stays in the hunt as Donald leads way RoRy McIlRoy continues to lead a strong Irish charge at the weather delayed Dunhill links Championship but the Co.Down 20-year-old saw Englands luke Donald charge past him into a one-shot lead ahead of todays final round. Donald put himself in a position to end a winless streak lasting three and a half years by matching the lowest round of his European Tour career with an eight-under-par 64 at Kingsbarns. McIlroy, who needs a second place finish to take over the lead in the Race to Dubai, was joined by Simon Dyson on 14 under after the tournament went into an extra day because of Saturdays gale-force winds. The Irishman, who is partnered at the pro-am event by his father Gerry, went two clear when he made a 25-foot putt for eagle at the third at Kingsbarns. But then came three bogeys and in the end he was content with a 69. McIlroy said: It will be great to play with [my father] on the old Course again and to win would be incredible. Awesome. Darren Clarke also vaulted himself into contention with a 67 at Kingsbarns to lie two off the place alongside joint overnight leader Michael Hoey, while Paul McGinley is a further two shots back. gOLF DunhILL LInkS ChaMpIOnShIp Relaxed Rory: Mcilroy takes a break during his third round at Kingsbarns yesterday Picture: Action Images RugBY MAGNeRS leAGUe Business picking up for satisfied CheikaBy GAReth MAKiM Cian edge: leinster prop healy fends off David Wallace MIChAeL CheIKA admitted Leinster had earned the right to be satisfied after inflicting a 30-0 drubbing on arch rivals Munster on Saturday night but insisted the real business begins this weekend when the heineken Cup holders begin their defence agains London Irish. Cheikas side thoroughly dom- inated Munster at the RDS, out- playing the Magners League champions in every facet of the game, running in three tries cour- tesy of Gordon DArcy, Brian oDriscoll and Shane horgan. But it was in the contact zones where the disparity between the sides was most marked as the hosts won turnover ball almost at will thanks to the powerful hit- ting of Nathan hines, Jamie heaslip and Kevin McLaughlin. There was further salt rubbed in Munster wounds when prop John hayes was sent off for stamping on Cian healy during a maul, the fall-out from which could impact notonlyMunsterbutIrelandahead of the November internationals. Asked if it was a performance to put a smile on coachs face, Cheika replied: Aw yeah, obvi- ously. After last year when we got beaten at home convincingly it was very important for us to make sure our fans didnt have to go through that again this season because its not a pleasant expe- rience to get beaten by your arch rivals at home. I thought the players stuck to their job pretty well tonight, all night, they didnt really take their foot off. There were periods when Mun- ster started to get back into the game and they were able to halt that and get back into the ascend- ancy. It was a job well done. But with high-flying London Irish in Dublin on Friday night, Cheika was quick to turn his at- tention towards his squads crucial european opener. he said: Its a new game. This victory is wasted if we dont back it up with a better performance next weekend. I watched them play [Friday night against Sale] and they dogged a win out. [But] they can play really good attacking foot- ball and were going to have a different challenge and our work really cut out for us. This was good for us in the sense that its nice to beat Munster, but at the same time we well and truly understand that the real busi- ness is starting next weekend. Defeat an embarrassment for Donncha DonnCHA oCallaghan admitted Munster had been embarrassed by the nature of their defeat by leinster. The Magners league champions were shut out at the RDS as they went down 30-0 to their provincial rivals. lock oCallaghan said: Its hugely disappointing. To lose a derby game is disappointing but it was the manner we lost it. Totally dominated, really. We came out second best in every area. We were blown off the pitch. of course you are embarrassed. It was tough enough against the wind but then to get opened up is hugely disappointing. Full credit to them, their hunger was greater and thats the disappointing thing for us. That is why it is embarrassing.
