Television What To Watch Head-to-head: Pat Kennys on the Frontline tonight Todays highlights With Stephen Mulkearn Pick Of The Day Daredevils Channel 4, 9pm Ever heard of wingsuit proximity flying? What about ski parachuting? The lunatics who practise this death- defying activity really are doing what the rest of us can only dream of flying. Jumping off mountains as well as some of the worlds tallest buildings, the practitioners of this sport use nothing more than a specially designed para-suit, which keeps them soaring downwards and at the same time sets their inner Superman free. Uplifting indeed! The Frontline RT1, 10.35pm So Pat Kilroy-Silk has joined the frontline of current affairs TV presenters, but despite rave reviews, its been a bit hard to get used to. You know how it is: youre zapping through the channels and you come upon Kenny interviewing some mandarin in studio, and the mind boggles is it the Late, Late or a filler from the archives? And then theres the confusing shiny blue set, usually only seen on RT Sport! But despite the improved audience interaction, you soon realise its just another bout of talking heads. Opening for a horse act. It was billed as an amazing flying horse and it would dive from a highboard off a pier in Atlantic City into the ocean. When the horse was getting dried off, Id sing some songs. That was a rough gig. Id sing for 15 minutes and do six shows a day. You say Frank Sinatra was brutal, what did you see him do? He was very nice to me. I never had a problem with him. But I saw his other side. When a drunk spilled wine over Lucille Balls husbands jacket at a restaurant, Frank had his minders take him outside and break the guys nose. I didnt know how a guy could be so tender in his music and yet, at the same time, so brutal. Did you learn anything about yourself from writing the book? I got sick of myself. Writing about yourself for two months, when its just me, me, me, its a bit much. I had a toilet seat at one of the army bases. Towards the end of the tour, about 60 people from the crew and cast signed a petition asking me to sleep with Zsa Zsa and give her the crabs. Were you tempted? No, it wasnt in my contract. What was it like to have a revival so late in your career? Those car commercials were great. Using Music To Watch Girls By, which Id recorded 20 years before, meant I suddenly had a younger group of fans. It was odd but great. What have you spent the money on? My biggest extravagance is art. I guess my Picasso is probably one of the greatest, it wasnt cheap. You were friends with Robert Kennedy, it must have been traumatic when he was shot. Yes. I was there. I went to the hospital with him. That was a hard time. He asked me to be a delegate during his election campaign and I said Id love a break and came back to it. Was it a pleasant trip down memory lane? Some of it was, some of it was difficult. It was fun to reminisce about singing with my brothers [The Williams Brothers]. The difficult time was when I started singing alone. I made mistakes and tried to be a song-and-dance man but no one wanted to see me do it. After a little while, I realised I needed to sing pop songs. You worked with Zsa Zsa Gabor, why was she so unpopular? She thought she was a star and expected star treatment you couldnt do that on a road trip like the one we did with Bob Hope. She had the general of a military camp we played at out of bed at 3am and demanded he get her a down pillow because she couldnt sleep. Its not easy to find one of those on an army base. She was a pain in the ass. What was the thing about people signing a petition for you to give her crabs? I got crabs from to. I hadnt told him I was a Republican. I switched parties, but after he was killed, I changed back. Did your different political opinions affect your friendship? No, we didnt talk politics. Ours was a relationship between me, Bobby, Claudine and Ethel [their respective wives]. Wed stay at their house, theyd stay with us. Wed go skiing, we were good friends. What do you think of Obama? Im not a fan. Hes really a radical liberal. Taking over the banks, doing all the things hes done, I dont think the government should be involved. He really wants us to be a socialist country. You knew Michael Jackson, what went wrong? I only knew him as a kid when he was on my show with his brothers. He was very talented and such a decent guy. I dont believe the things people say about him. He never grew up. I dont think anyone really understood him. Im not an Obama fan. Hes a radical liberal. Taking over the banks, doing the things hes done. He wants us to be a socialist country Andy Williams Easy Listening legend Andy Williams, 81, has been a singer for more than 70 years.
