Television What To Watch Bear with me: Charlie Vandergaw and a friend Todays highlights With Adam Hyland Pick Of The Day The Man Who Lives With Bears RT2, 8pm Charlie Vandergaw leads an interesting life, despite living alone in the Alaskan wilderness. Well, not alone, because he devotes his time to feeding and befriending huge grizzly and black bears, and helps them out wherever he can. Like the ill-fated Timothy Treadwell, subject of the Werner Herzog documentary Grizzly Man, he runs the risk of being attacked and killed every single day, and though his insistence that he is in no danger may suggest he is not smarter than the average bear-lover, his interaction with these huge, ferocious animals is heart-warming. Come West Along The Road RT1, 7.30pm Nicholas Carolan goes down to the RT dungeons to bring us some more archive footage of Irelands finest musicians from the last 40 years, and comes up trumps with scenes of Dolores Keane playing the concertina. On top of that, there is footage of John Faulkner playing the bouzouki, an instrument adapted from the original Greek version to fit perfectly with Irish music. Her trademark is a performance in a giant Martini glass. She was married to Marilyn Manson and has designed a range of lingerie for Wonderbra Interview by Andrew Williams My cleavage was censored on Eurovision... I wasnt the most scantily clad person on stage but I was singled out for my curves Why are your bras better than other bras? The reason theyre great is that Ive designed them. Im a lingerie aficionado. I consider myself an expert. When I was 15, I worked in a lingerie store which led me to posing for pin-ups and ultimately performing burslesque. So my whole career has revolved around lingerie. How did you become interested in lingerie? I worked at this pizza place next to this really great lingerie store. I went to the lingerie store all the time and they finally gave me a job. I was determined to become the best lingerie sales girl I could be, so I studied the history of lingerie and learned how to fit bras properly. I taught myself about the lingerie styles of the 1940s and 1950s. A lot of models who posed for those mens magazines were also burlesque performers, so it had a snowball effect on me. Whats the most expensive item of lingerie you own? The corsets I wear on stage are by a famous corset maker called Mr Pearl. Theyre the most expensive items I wear and maybe the most expensive items of lingerie you can buy. Are there any trends you find offensive? Crocs. I really cant accept those under any circumstances. I was at an airport with [celebrity blogger] Perez Hilton who was wearing those shoes. I was aghast. Does lacing down to such a small waist in your corsets have an adverse effect on your internal organs? Im not really a fanatic for tight lacing. I have a very pliable waist but dont wear corsets every day, as I used to in my early twenties. I like to cinch the waist in but Im not into body modification so I dont deal with organ moving. How did you end up on the Eurovision Song Contest? The German entry invited me. Id never heard of Eurovision but was intrigued by it. I was at Jean Paul more money than I was as a go-go dancer without showing much skin. I thought it would be an interesting experiment to work there. What was the most difficult thing to do? The socialising aspect. I preferred being on stage. Im not one for small talk. There wasnt much those people in there could say to me. How long do you plan to continue performing? Im not sure. When I started in 1992 I didnt think Id still be doing it at 37 but my show has evolved appropriately. Id like to get into directing a full length revue and direct girls rather than always being the performer myself. What is the secret of your success? Why are you the worlds foremost burlesque star? It could be that I have longevity. Or I might just be lucky. Or I might work the hardest and be the best. I dont know. I believe its because I studied hard at it. I know my formula, I know what works for me and that comes across on stage. Gaultiers atelier for a fitting for the Cannes Film Festival and his assistant said Eurovision was Jean Pauls favourite thing of the year. It was quite an experience that Ill never forget. My cleavage was censored, which I didnt think was very fair as I thought it was supposed to be Eurovision not Americavision. I definitely wasnt the most scantily clad person on stage but I was singled out for my voluptuous curves. Would you enter it as a singer? Ive recorded a few songs for my shows but I talk my way through them, old Hollywood movie-style. Id lip-synch: Im a dancer not a singer. How did you get into stripping? I was a go-go dancer on the rave scene in the early 1990s and a friend took me to a strip club, which wasnt truly a strip club as it wasnt even topless, just girls dancing in their bikinis. They were making much 14 metrolife Friday, October 2, 2009 Dv1
